“Just a few more blocks Thom.”
They were finally there. Well almost. They were just a couple blocks away from the place Cliff yearned to be. From the first moment he woke up in this crazy world all he wanted was to go home. He longed to see his wife, his two daughters, his entire family who he loved and cherished.
“Are you sure your sure about this Cliff?”
Thom asked and Cliff nodded instantly.
“As I'll ever be friend.”
That wasn't entirely a lie, but there was a part of him that was scared. Nervous that his own family may not remember who he was. But how could they? How could they forget there own father and husband? Could this new world be that cruel? He wouldn't let that deter him though. He knew in his heart that he had to do this. He had to try. Cliff glanced up at the street name.
“Longview.”
He said with a sigh.
“This is the road. It should be down there just around the bend.”
Cliff looks at Thom and smiles. But Thom just stares back. Thom has had a bad feeling about this since he heard about it from Cliff when he first met.
“One last chance to reconsider?”
Cliff shakes his head.
“We've already came this far, we have to find out. Besides...
Cliff swallows some fear.
“...even if they don't remember me, at least I'll know they are safe. Lets go.”
They start walking down the road. The further they walk the more they can see around the corner. House after house all in the middle of white bread suburbia. Little kids playing in there front lawns others doing yard work. There was a friendly mail man that said hello to every one he passed. Then as he moved even further thats when he seen his house.
In rubble.
If his heart sank any lower he wouldn't have been able to run so fast. He just darted toward the scene. The exact place his house was had nothing but ashes and rubble in its place. Cliff ran up in a frantic panic his heart was racing and his breaths were fast.
“What the hell happened here?”
He asked himself out loud as he dropped to his knees. A nearby neighbor comes walking up, he does his best to be polite.
“It burned down last week. I didn't really know the family inside, I think it was a woman and two little girls that lived inside....
Cliff looked up at the neighbor. Cliff pleaded through misty eyes not to say the next part.
“...they uh....they didn't make it.”
Cliff just collapses on the ground and starts crying. His heart ultimately broken from the news.
“Boy your taking it pretty hard.”
“I was the womans husband and those little girls father!”
Cliff continues to mourn as the neighbor pulls out his cell phone while Cliff wasnt looking and texts the word “hooked” to some number and puts his phone back in his pocket. Then the neighbor kneels down next to Cliff and tries to comfort him.
“Hey man, it will be okay. I'm sorry this had to happen.”
Something about the way that neighbor said “had” just took Cliff in another direction. He stopped crying and slowly turned and looked at the neighbor with a scary glare.
“What in the hell do you mean “had”?”
We open up on the face of Cliff Clinton.
“Last week I had a big match with a lot of things on the line. I wanted to win a shot at a title of my choosing but I also wanted to make sure Xavior Cross wouldn't get double teamed. Unfortunately I didn't even get a chance to compete. Somebody was able to lock me out of the building that night. I'm not naming any names but I bet it was Age of X. they don't like me and I don't like them so I wouldn't put it past them. It probably wasn't Angel though but instead it was one of his goons. Worse thing was they waited until I was already out side to lock the door behind me.”
He shakes his head and cracks his knuckles.
“I'd love to see Angel and his goons try to physically remove me from the building. I bet they couldn't. In fact I challenge Age of X, especially the chump that locked me out of the building, to show there face. Meet me directly and try to throw me out and see what happens!
He does the just bring it motion and then continues.
“But thats for another time. For now I'm set to face off against two men in a triple threat match at the Extreme Endurance pay per view. Now the thing about triple threat matches is that I dont even have to be pinned to lose the match. So I have to be on my toes. And I know I'm about to get inside the ring with two guys who are both brand new to this business. Most people would just instantly rule there opponents off if they were new but I'm smarter then that. I know that Kyle Mason is the real deal. He may be new to this business but I've seen that same heart in veterans that spent there life in that squared circle. I've been in the ring against Mason more times then any other opponent here in IWF and let me tell you something folks there is absolutely no denying the hunger inside that man. Kyle Mason has a drive to compete like no other and I know that he isn't going to bring anything less.
Then there is Warren Kidd. Another new comer to this business but he has been traveling all over the world and has been trained by legends. That doesn’t go unnoticed. That puts the Kidd at a different level all together when entering IWF. I've been in Kidd's shoes before, I remember what its like to be chomping at the bit to go out and perform. I remember the passion that drove me and still does today. Kidd has only had one match and I can see it inside of him. Perhaps he got it from that legendary trainer of his.
And then there is me. What do I have? What am I here to prove? I'll tell you what I have that these kids don't have....I have the taste.”
He starts licking his lips.
“Oh yeah thats right boys....I have the taste. It's one thing to be hungry, stomach growling, damn near starving. But what happens when you finally get a piece? What happens when you get that taste? You start to think about it more and more. You start to get cravings. You start to become obsessed. Thats what I have. I've been to the top of the mountain, I've had the finest steak in this buisness and It was taken away from me. I have the experience of a twenty plus year veteran who has been the world champion and you know what boys....I want it again. I want to taste that sweet savory flavor again. I feel like an addict. I need it to prove what I am.
“So this Sunday at Extreme Endurance I am going to walk into this triple threat match with two very hungry men....and I'm walking out with a plate of seconds...
Before Cliff even knew what was going on he was on his feet and had the neighbor by the throat.
“What do you mean “had to happen”?”
Cliff said as he squeezed tighter. The neighbor did his best to try and explain.
“Ack ack...it was....ack ack....figure of speech!”
Cliff shook his head, he didn't want to believe any of this.
“LIAR!”
He screamed it at the top of his lungs and tossed the neighbor to the ground. By now the rest of the neighborhood had heard the commotion and they all stepped out of there homes to come see what was happening.
“YOU DID THIS!”
Cliff stepped toward the man who scrambled backward as quickly as he could.
“No...I swear!”
“But you did nothing to help them!”
Cliff took another step forward and kicked the man while he was down.
“AH! What was I supposed to do?
“You were supposed to save them!”
Cliff kicks the man again. His anger and sadness getting the best of him.
“You are there husband and father....that was your job!”
That hit was stronger then any physical strike could ever be. Because it was true. Cliff couldnt figure out how to take that so he just lost his mind.
“I'LL KILL YOU!”
Cliff lunges for his throat again and begins to choke the life from the man when suddenly a few vans pulled up in front of the house. From each came four men dressed in the same suit and gear that his previous hunters wore. Cliff looked up and noticed about twelve men with guns cautiously approaching him.
“What the hell? How did they find me?”
the neighbor had a horrible poker face.
“You set me up!? You did have something to do with this!”
the neighbor shook his head.
“No...they are the ones who burned the house down! They just asked me to let them know when you got here!.”
He points at the men that now had Cliff completely surrounded. Cliff looks at the men who he thought wanted to kill him and who had allegedly killed him family already and he just abandons all logic and dives after them and thats when twelve men unleash there stun guns and Cliff goes down hard. The men work to load Cliff into the van and they drive off.
