It felt great to finally step back inside the ring. After a few years out of the business, I was able to prove to the world that I still have what it takes to stand among the very best, and defeat the very best --- Portia Roberts may have not been the cream of the crop, but she’s going to become something big, someday. I knew that I was going to have my work cut out for me at Bloody Assizes, which is why I have been in my training facility all week…. With me has been my brother, sister, and husband.
The scene begins inside of the training facility in Hartford, Connecticut where she trained her students that were still looking to get into the ring… Chris sat on one of the corners, while Angel stood on the apron with his arms folded across the top rope. Jennie, the younger sister of Tara who has been wrestling in the indies and has also been trained by Tara, was inside of the ring with her. The two had been sparring for about ten minutes before the scene had begun. Angel clapped his hands while watching his wife take her own sister down with an arm drag and straight into a cross armbar! Jennie, wise from the experience that Tara shared with her, was able to quickly wriggle free and get to her feet before Tara can get up.
Chris “Doc” Docherty:
“Defense!”
Jennie takes the attack to Tara’s legs but she is able to kick at her a few times to fend her off. She catches Tara’s ankle and tries to spin her around to put her into an ankle lock, but before she can have it locked in, Tara rolls forward and forces Jennie outside of the ring!
Chris “Doc” Docherty:
“Great job, Tara; let’s take five.”
Still flat on her back after rolling forward and sending her own sister out of the ring, she draws in a few deep breaths. Satisfied with the way that Tara was able to defend herself, Angel nods his head and steps into the ring heading toward his wife to see if she’s okay --- meanwhile, Doc has gotten out of the ring but Jennie has already gotten to her feet.
Jennie Docherty:
“Good reversal, sis.”
Portia and Jenny Famularo were definitely going to put up a good fight for me --- one was trained by Xavier Williams, who I’ve already proclaimed as one of my favorite wrestlers to watch. The other is the wife to Xander, daughter-in-law to Gib; both of which were former World Champions, so there was concern for what they might have been able to teach her. I knew that training with my sister was one of the best things that I could do, as she’s been one of my best students and has made a success of her own wrestling career outside of the mainstream.
I kept laying on the ground for a few moments longer until I saw the face of my husband hovering over me. His hand extends out and I take it, as he helps me back to my feet.
Tara Blake:
“Thanks, Jennie. Good move out there; I’m sure if it was anyone else, you would’ve had that locked in and the match would be over.”
I hear her laugh over the comment, before responding.
Jennie Docherty:
“Funny story… I’ve won a couple of my matches from doing that exact thing. Not many consider rolling like that. Occasionally, they try; but it’s after I already have it locked in for a little while… too little too late.”
Holding a towel to her face to wipe some of the sweat from her forehead and brow, Jennie stands at the apron of the ring while Doc is doing some of the homework for Tara; looking at the match that took place on the Diamond House Show between Portia and Tara. While it was a victory for Tara, there was still a lot to learn from Portia just by watching it.
Angel:
“When are you going to sign with IWF, Jennie?”
Angel’s eyes were already locked on his sister-in-law, and the question forced Tara to slowly turn her head and roll her eyes toward her sister… both were waiting for her answer.
Jennie Docherty:
“I actually wasn’t planning on signing a contract with them. I wouldn't stand a chance---“
Bull.
Tara Blake:
“You should. There’s no doubt in my mind that you could hold your own, and even surpass many of the other people around you.
Jennie replies by nodding her head, but her eyes lower. The body language said it all, but Jennie made it clear.
Jennie Docherty:
“Right now, I have everything going good for me. I like where I am. The schedule isn’t quite as demanding as the mainstream wrestling… I won’t say no, but just want to say; not right now.”
The news that she didn’t intend on signing a contract was disappointing to me, because I could use someone to stand alongside with me that I knew could really watch my back. Angel just shrugged his shoulders over the news, but I hope that she didn’t blame him a lot for trying --- it’s his job as one of the managers of IWF to see that every division gets the people it needs to excel. The Cruiserweight Division was just where he helped people within his division after they got their foot in the door… But his eyes instantly looked up at my brother, who was still watching the tape and taking down a few notes.
Angel:
“What about you, Chris?”
He turned his head over his shoulder to see all of us looking at him --- a sly smirk resting on his face.
Doc:
“I’m not going to answer that.”
I shake my head, wishing that both Chris and Jennie would sign a contract with IWF but I’m not going to be the annoying sibling who pleads with them to do so… I respect their decision. I walk back toward the middle of the ring and gesture for Jennie to get back in, and she nods her head to me before sliding back in from under the bottom rope.
Jennie Docherty:
“You’re ready to restart this?”
Tara Blake:
“I figure that while Chris is getting some notes there, we can keep working.”
Angel moves to the nearest corner, as Jennie hangs her towel over the top rope, heading to the middle of the ring to meet with her sister. They circle each other as the scene goes out.
There was one reason for anyone to step into the ring, and this is the reason that I ask anyone before I agree to be their trainer. It’s not about the money for me, it never has been; that’s just been a benefit. What it’s about for me, and what it’s about for my students --- is competition. Competition is everything! If it’s not there, there’s no need for you to step into the ring. Ever. That’s why the championships are important to me because that is what sets us apart as being the best of the best. The best that the company and the industry has to offer.
The problem is that I have not held a championship since 2008… Five years --- Five long years without wearing a championship around my waist. It’s not to say that I haven’t tried, but to no avail. After five long years of not only wearing a championship around my waist; five long years of never having the opportunity to wear a championship around my waist! It’s all going to come to an end at Bloody Assizes when I have my chance to win the Ruby Championship…
Now, the question that comes to my mind: Why not the Diamond Championship? Understandably, I didn’t have a contract signed since day one and they were very fast to get things going for it --- I have to settle for the Ruby Championship… I’m not meaning to insult the Ruby Championship and claim that I don’t want it; because you can bet your ass that I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that I’m the one walking out with it around my waist! You can bet your ass that I’m going to make sure every single woman in the Diamonds Division has their eyes on the Ruby Champion! And, as Ruby Champion, I’m going to set that bar to the stars.
Step one was returning to the ring, which was a success. My second step has been placed in front of me; and that second step is going to be achieving the status of being the first holder of the Ruby Championship, and carrying it to success.
It’s not going to be easy… I can’t say that enough. I can’t make it clear enough. It’s not going to be an easy match.
The first person that comes to mind is the person that I faced last week, in our debut match --- Portia Roberts. A phenomenal athlete, who has a bright future ahead of her… Trained… by… Xavier Williams. The very man that helped my husband with taking the X-Division to a whole new level back in nCw! I don’t want you to mistake my respect for you as fear; we’ve already stepped into the ring to face each other. We both know how that ended, and many people believe that it could’ve ended either way.
I don’t.
I believe that the match had one way of ending, and that was with my arm being raised as the winner. The reason that it had only one way of ending was because you failed to acknowledge and realize that our paths were never really destined to cross because of Angel and Xavier Williams; you see, when you met Xavier Williams… you were beneath him. He trained you. Everything that you know inside of the ring, he taught you --- I was a wrestler long before I met Angel. Not only was I a wrestler, but I was one of the top wrestlers known throughout the industry! Now, sooner or later --- all of our paths are going to cross. But my husband, and your trainer, had nothing to do with our meeting.
You have your chance to have some sort of redemption over me on Bloody Assizes, and while you’re more than capable of giving me a run for my money; I wouldn’t count on you winning. You have no idea how badly I want to walk out with this championship. You have no idea how much I need to walk out with the Ruby Championship.
You’re going to need all the luck in the world to walk out with that belt, but… don’t hold your breath.
The next person in this match is going to be Jenny Famularo. There’s no hiding the talent that’s in that family name --- you have Gib… this man gave my husband some of the toughest fights in his career. He’s the father of Xander Famularo, your husband, who was the Gladiator and Road To The Gold winner in the same year! The only man to do so; and he has a sister, who is none other than my favorite opponent --- Zelda Knite. She single handedly dominated the entire Starlet Division back in nCw, and was the sole reason that many of the women who signed a contract chose to walk away just because they couldn’t deal with someone who was, hands down, better than them. Another brother of Zelda is Adam. I don’t need to tell anyone about how great of a wrestler that he is inside of the ring, and I’m not going to.
All I’m going to say is that you, as the wife of Xander, have all of these people that were probably more than willing to help prepare you for stepping into the ring. I’m going to make this as clear as possible; you cannot screw your way to greatness. Hell, you can’t even be born into greatness! What made both Xander and Zelda as great as they are was how serious they took their training --- they worked for the positions that they got themselves into. All Gib could do was teach them the steps, they had to dance on their own…
The Kane’s have also worked for everything that they’ve accomplished.
It’s the same thing with my brother and sister. I never trained Doc, but he stepped into the ring around the same time that I did and both of us became legends on our own end. We’ve taken turns training Jennie, but neither one of us takes credit for what she’s accomplished in her career….
The name may be prestigious, but it doesn’t make the individual that way… I didn’t wake up one day and say, “I’m a Docherty, I’m going to be great,” and neither did anyone else with their family name. There’s nothing mystical about it. The only thing that I hope for this Sunday from you is proving that you could be competition for me; I want you to be able to stand in that ring with me, face to face, and give me a great fight.
At the end of the fight, just as I told Portia; I’m going to be walking out of the ring with what’s mine.
The Ruby Championship… is mine. I’m bringing it home.
