Bloody Assizes...
Backstage...
I'm covered in my own blood...
As well as everyone else's...
The crowd is still cheering...
Still chanting...
{ Cable Arcane leans up against a wall somewhere backstage after Bloody Assizes has wrapped. The winners are celebrating, the losers are making excuses, Cable Arcane only smiles, his teeth stained with his own blood. Gjenrei approaches him and tilts his head as he looks at his partner. }
"Are you feeling ok?"
"I've never felt better, why?"
"Because you're smiling, I've never seen you smile. It's a little creepy to be honest."
"I'm happy."
"Perhaps I'm missing something, exactly why are you happy?"
"We just went out there and put it all on the line, we gave everything we had and do you hear them? The show is over and their still cheering. Never in my whole life have I felt what I'm feeling now. We didn't win, but it doesn't matter because those people... They loved watching us try."
"It sounds like you're starting to listen to Kyle."
"Better than listening to Angel."
{ Cable pushes off the wall. He places his right hand on the shoulder of his partner. He smiles and shakes his head at Gjenrei who still isn't sure what to feel. }
"Come on, lets grab some dinner. I'm paying."
{ Honorbound head off down the hall. Our scene fades. }
We didn't win...
But we didn't lose either...
That's not me making an excuse for coming away empty handed. That's me coming to the realization that there are things bigger than championships...
My brother...
Angel...
He would frown if he heard me talking like this. But he has never been able to feel anything for anyone other than himself. He's a man possessed by material possession and I feel sorry for him...
I can't live like that anymore...
There was a time when my selfish needs and desires out weighed my morality, my honor. That time has passed. At Bloody Assizes I was able to put aside my selfish need to justify my skills and just fight for the sack of fighting...
I stepped into a Battle Royal with nothing to lose, nothing to prove, just a desire, a will to put up the best fight I could possibly manage...
My body hurt...
My head ached...
I had already lost so much blood...
But the fans cheered me on. With every move. Every hit. Their screams drove me, gave me the energy I needed to survive...
No, I didn't win, that honor goes to another man...
But I survived...
I did what I set out to do and their admiration of the fans, their respect is all the victory I need
{ It's a few days later, Cable paces back and forth. His jovial spirit no washed away, the reality of some of his recevent revelations hangs heavy over him. He looks up to the dirty clock hanging on the wall of the old gym. The doors creek open and Cable turns to see Abigail Holland standing there. She looks as beautiful as he remembers, though the concern on her face is evident. She's seen the worst of Cable as well as the best and she's worried where life is going to take him. }
"Abby..."
"Cable."
"I need to know..."
"How I know Angel is lying?"
"Yes."
"I never trusted him, Cable and when he took you away and made you do those horrible things in RPW I called some friends, we did some digging and..."
"And what?"
"And there is no way you have the same mother."
"But how do you know that?"
{ Cable was near pleading with her, he had never had a real family and now the only one he has known was slowly being ripped away from him. }
"Angel's birth almost killed her and after he was born... She wasn't able to have more children. It would have been physically impossible."
{ The news crushes him. Cable steps back from her and drops to his knees. For a moment he can't breath, the weight of it all is too much. The awful realization that the things he did, the people he hurt, weren't because he came from and evil blood line, it was because HE had done them. }
"Cable..."
"Don't go, Abby."
"I'm not going anywhere."
{ He lay his head against her stomach as she stroked the back of his head. Our scene fades. }
Most consider the man who did win the Battle Royal a monster...
I've come to learn that the term monster has a very broad definition. A terrorist is considered by most to be a monster. A criminal can be a monster. A rapist, a pedophile, even a used car sales men. All monsters depending upon the point of view of the one using the term...
Even I was considered a monster once...
My lust for blood...
My desire to cause pain...
Was an unquenchable thirst...
An endless abyss...
And once I let myself fall I discover there was no bottom. There was no end. There was no satisfying it. Win or lose, it didn't matter because all I wanted was to hurt people...
Hurt them like I hurt...
That life was a hallow existence. I was never happy with anything or anyone. I pushed away and hurt the people I should of been caring about. I found out the hard way that if you don't fight for something...
You'll fall for anything...
I'm not here to judge you Lex...
I'm not here to lecture you either...
Every man is entitled to walk his own path in life. If you've chosen to walk the path of the monster then that is your choice and eventually you will have to live with it...
I will tell you as a man who knows what it's like that one day you will wake up to realize how very little you mean to the world...
Fear does not equal respect...
Fear does not equal a legacy...
Legends are not made by monsters, legends defeat monsters...
The fans, the people who give us a business to make a living in, they don't remember monsters. They don't remember devils. They only remember the names and faces of people who have overcome them...
It's for that reason that I feel sorry for you Lex...
Once you may of had honor...
You may of had a family...
You may of had something to fight for...
Now you are simply a broken reflection of your former self. Masked in horror, guilt and destruction you have vowed to lay waste to the competition until you are the only one left...
What will that really accomplish?
A momentary sense of vindication for a life time of horrors?
And when a hero eventually comes, as they are want to do, and vanquishes the great monster that is Lex Sense, it will not be your reign of terror that is remembered, only the man who ended it.
And what will you have then, Lex?
A loss that will help build another man's legend?
I speak from experience and whether or not you listen to me, doesn't matter. I only want to be able to say that I tried to steer you away from this course. That I, before anyone else even had the chance, tried to help the man who would be a monster remember what it is he even got into this business for...
I know what comes next...
I've seen this story play out with my brother time and again...
There will be threats...
And promises...
My words will be made to look foolish...
And it will all be done behind a devilish grin...
But deep down inside we both know that I'm right. That when the time comes and your career is over you will have nothing but blood stained hands to show for it and that...
Will never be enough.
I'm not afraid of you...
And no amount of pain will change that...
Win or lose, I will survive this match. I will live to fight another day. I will make my legend and I will do it with my soul intact. I'm not a man without sin, I'm a man looking for redemption and if walking through the fires of hell that is known as Lex Sense is what I have to do...
I will do so with a smile.
I'm looking forward to matching myself against you Lex...
I'm even more excited to see which is stronger...
Your need to hurt me...
Or their need to see you hurt.
{ Angel sits in office at the back of his gym, his usual aura of horror and mystic gone with his wrestling career. This is just a man. He looks up before his door opens and only smiles when it slams closed. Cable Arcane hovers before him. }
"I know the truth."
"That is unfortunate."
"For you."
"I only guided your hand..."
"No more lectures, Angel. I want to know why you lied to me."
{ Angel leans forward on his desk, his hands clasped. For a moment something of his old self slips back in as his eyes glaze over like a shark about to feed. }
"What makes you think I answer to you?"
{ Cable doesn't answer, he doesn't have one. He can't threaten this man, it would mean nothing. Angel feeds off of negative emotions. To give in to his hate would only be giving in to Angel. Cable lowers his head but his steel glare never leaves the man who claimed to be his brother. }
"You may not be my brother but we are more alike then you will admit."
"No. I'm not."
"You can only hide from what you are for so long."
"I'm not a monster."
"And when you finally lose it, when you are finally consumed by the fire within, I will not be there to guide you anymore."
{ Cable's eyes burn bright with rage. His hands shake as his adrenaline pumps and a million different scenarios play out in his head where Angel ends up nothing more than a bloody broken heap on the floor. However he keeps his composure and takes a step back from the man leaning on the desk. He breaths slowly. Angel grins, his lips curled back like a shark showing his teeth, his eyes black, a true visage of horror. Cable exhales, letting go of his anger with his breath before he turns his back on Angel and walks out of the office. The grin never leaves the face of Angel as our scene fades one last time. }
Some will praise you...
Some will hate you...
Some will not even care...
But whatever their opinion is, you never let it bother you, do you Freakke?
Regardless of your critics, you never let the smile fade from your face...
Win or lose, it never deters you from your mission to entertain the people in the crowd, the only ones who really matter in this business...
It's easy for some of us to sit back and claim the fans don't matter, but that statement is entirely false. Without the people in the stands there would be no professional wrestling, no IWF, no place for men like you or me to go out there an do what we do best...
The fans are our life blood...
And you put the biggest smile possible on their faces each and every week...
I admire you, Freakke...
I admire your ability to never let life get the best of you. While some may allow the pressures of this business to weigh them down, you simply shrug off the losses and the wins, the titles and the accolades and step out into that ring, ego aside, and do what you love to do...
That's not something to be ashamed of no matter how hard they try to make it seem that way...
This week, you and I are entering a match I'm sure their predicting is a no win situation for us...
Neither of us are very big or strong, we're both slaves to our abilities, mine being my hands and feet, your's being to soar higher than almost anyone on the roster.
No one is predicting us to win...
No one expects us to walk in and take out the giant...
But you've made a career out of defying the odds...
I've made mine out of survival...
Every time you slap on that paint, every time you step up to the top rope, every time you win a match you aren't supposed to win...
You defy the odds.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you I'm better than you...
I'm not going to pretend like I know the outcome of this match...
I'm going to tell you to the defy the odds like you always do...
I'm going to tell you to bring better than your "A" game...
I'm going to tell you to expect nothing less than that from me...
Just because we aren't supposed to win tomorrow doesn't mean it isn't going to happen...
The critics can say what they want about Lex Sense but all his hype will mean nothing if he can't live up to it...
We have nothing to lose here, Freakke, we aren't supposed to win. Lex, on the other hand, has to live up to his expectations, to their expectations, to the companies expectations...
He has to beat us...
He has to save face...
He has to be the monster he promotes himself as...
All we've got to be is ourselves...
And just keep defying the odds.
Keep surviving.
No mercy.
