Guernica stands in his standard ring attire on a scene of karst landscape, with Guernica looming over a cliff edge. The waves off the sea beside bash into the side of this cliff, sending sprays of seawater up into to Guernica’s face. Small droplets even gather on the lens. These droplets gather up and blur the scene slightly as ‘Lord Of The Land’ begins to play in the background. Guernica begins to speak.
‘Finally, I let the world, and possibly more importantly, let myself know what I can actually do. I showed the people behind the curtain that I’m not here simply to fill the gaps when there’s a space. I am not just there to give you a challenge; I’m here to do what I can to beat you and respect you out the other side.’
‘I did that with one John Tolly. I pinned him for three seconds between those ropes, and I got to respect him on the other side. I know Tolly very well. He is not quite a person to let himself out and talk, but I need to tell him. The world is your stage. Let the world know you’re here. I did the same; and now after last Thursday they know I’m here.’
Guernica’s blurred image walks over to the camera and wipes the lens, clearing the image. A storm is coming in the background, marked by the inconsistent claps of thunder and flashes of lightning. Guernica turns to camera to face away from the storm. The opposite direction is barren limestone pavement, with some flora growing in the grikes.
‘So, now that I’m finished with Señor Tolly, I move on to my next opponent. His name is Zach Staples, and he’s a fighter. I’m also a fighter, but he’s been a fighter since something terrible happened in his life. Something terrible happened in my life too, you know? You know me after all, you’re one of the many who caught a glance of me when I made myself known, and you day so as well. We both have a dark place, and I of us can control it.’
‘As for you? You are quite unknown and this point in time, Señor, but I worry for both of us. For me, because I’m on the receiving end, and you because you may not come out of this. You have come into this place like I did not so long ago; blind, looking for something. That certain something differs from my story and your story....’
----------------------------------
The scene suddenly fades to Guernica, this time in casual gear: jeans, black shoes, a generic top and sunglasses. He also has a back-pack on his back. He has no mask on, but is walking away from the camera; so all we see is black hair. His head is drooped down and he has a slowness in his stride.
The camera follows Guernica through a poor Mexican town. Guernica passes a number of salesmen, selling knock off glasses and watches. These people he simply ignores. The people he pays particular attention to are the beggars. Every single one he passes, he drops a coin or two in the basket, or if they’re without a basket; their hands. When one severely disabled beggar, with missing hands and a face of horror begs, Guernica drops some notes and some coins.
Eventually, Guernica arrives at his destination. A wide open space filled with fog; with overgrown grass and a crooked cobblestone path. A large sign with ‘Cementerio de Geriguezelo’ printed on it hangs over the entrance. It is clear that this place is a graveyard.
The camera follows Guernica down the winding path. Guernica detours from the path several times to go onto the grass in a desperate search for something. At last he arrives at a bed of white stones encased in a marble ‘bath’. At one end is a bed of flowers encased in a separate marble bath to the first one, and surrounding it are various pots of flowers, pictures of a young girl, no older than five, and also a handcrafted wooden monument that somebody took the time to make, signed ‘Fierro Henriquez’. At the other end is a gravestone, highly weathered, but the engraving is still readable:
Descanse En Paz
Tamara Henriquez
Muy Amados
Guernica mutters the engraving to himself before muttering the English meaning. Rest In Peace, Tamara Henriquez, Dearly Loved. Guernica falls to his knees and leans against the gravestone and lays his head on it and begins to weep audibly. After some time he takes off his bag and takes out a replica of his gold and white mask. He stares at it for a moment before letting out a loud wail and leaving the mask with all the other gifts. He also takes out a plastic bag, which contains two pots of flowers and four candles. He lays them symmetrically on the edge of the bath of white stones before unveiling a spray and a cloth. Guernica wipes down every inch of grime and chipped off rock from the bath and the gravestone; before mourning for a longer period of time.
Eventually, Guernica stands and mutters,’Hasta que te vuelva a ver, la hermana’, and the English translation, ‘Until I see you again, sister’ before leaving. The camera does not follow. Instead it pans down to examine the grave as the scene fades to white. We never get to see a shot of Guernica’s face.
----------------------------------
The scene fades back to Guernica in the karst landscape. He is staring off towards the coming storm in deep thought.
‘Many times people have told me that wearing masks, tagging hands and showing respect would only get me so far. And it will only get me so far; but I must respect this heritage. And I also must show my worth’
‘So this may be the first time that I don’t respect somebody when we come out the other side, Señor Staples. That’s a sad truth, even though we have so much that we need help with. But before the fight, whether it be fair and pretty or bloody and bad; the Guernica you saw against John Tolly, Mike Madness and got eliminated second in the IWF Roulette.’
Guernica starts visibly losing his cool and the emotion in his voice gets more powerful and strong as he shouts at the camera.
‘You say that you know me, but really you know a different person. There’s two Guernica’s in this business, and the one that’s coming this Thursday is not the one the general public have been watching this past month! This is a new challenge for you, and even if you show no respect in the ring I’ll do exactly what you said to do, I will earn it, and walk out the other end knowing that one person has been taught a lesson in respect, honour, heritage and gladiatorial lucha libre!’
‘I will show you what’s coming for you when you come to this business. It’s more pain and agony than you’ve experienced yet, and I will show you that!’
