The sounds of cheering, men yelling, the echoes of the basketball on the court, the noises fill the gymnasium. The scene opens with a group of kids, with the addition of Xavier Cross, playing a pick up game of basketball. More so, we notice that Javi James is playing along, as confident and strong as ever.
Xavier makes a quick pass down to the low-post to Javi, who fakes a shot, before putting the ball in the basket ever so casually. The two jog back, chatting it up, Javi with a smile across his face as the two fist-bump.
The two teams break apart, Xavier and Javi walk off together. But Javi immediately stops, looking up at a just barely overweight, balding black man, smiling from ear to ear, it was Javi’s father, DeMarcus James. The man quickly runs over to Xavier, grabbing the wrestler’s hand, shaking it eagerly, it doesn’t take Cross long to understand that this man, he was a leech.
A leech, is a person attaches themselves to a person, and uses their talents, fame, money, etc, to further than own ambitions. The kind of person who does things to benefit others, to benefit themselves later on down the road. We all know someone like that, they’re usually either very obvious about it, or are very charismatic. DeMarcus James, was not.
“Hello Xavier, or should I call you Phoenix. Hahaha!”
Javi looks embarassed, but his dad slaps him on the shoulder.
“M’boy finally rubbing elbows with the upper class superstars, the kind we’re gonna be as soon as he goes pro!”
“Er, what about college sir?”
“College? College! Who needs school with a jumper like that, who has been dunking the ball since seventh grade! Javi doesn’t need no brains! He’s got all the talent in the world.”
“....Mr. James, you think we could have a moment, Javi, why don’t you go talk to my friend, the guy I introduced you to earlier?”
Xavier nods, as Javi looks a bit nervous, as the teen walks away. Xavier turns his attention back to Senior James, trying to come up with a game plan.
“Shall we take a walk? I’ll give you the tour of the facilities.”
“It would be an honor Xavier!”
“Andrew Jacobsen, the third time we’ve met in IWF, this is the first time it will be just us in the ring, hopefully. I’m sure you still have some mixed feelings from Bloody A’s, with Blade putting you down like a sick dog, and then I pinned you, for the final fall, to win this World Heavyweight Title.
But will it just be us out there? Will Blade and Xander make their presence noticed once again. Xander nearly took my head off last week at the house show, but your good guy nature made you run out, yes, you were going to get some equal measure for yourself against Blade’s interference, but I know you Jacobsen all to well
You got heart. You got soul. You wouldn’t want to see anyone, not even Blade, pick up a victory that way. It was just your way of killing two birds with one stone. But don’t claim you did it for me, don’t talk that way Jacobsen, Blade is going to take your moral fortitude and spit all over it. The only thing that matters to that kid, is being the best, by any means possible.
With your good-goody attitude Jacobsen, you can’t beat him.
I don’t even think you can beat me this week. You need to change yourself, even if it is for this one match. Change that clean image for a little more brutal, a little more reckless. You can’t keep playing Superman against the man of steel.
But you’re not going to listen to me are you Jacobsen....
You’re going to overcome this obstacle without compromising who you are.
That’s why you hold the future in your hands Jacobsen, of this whole industry. You’re a role model, who has talent, and still the unlimited ceiling.
Jacobsen, when I was your age, I wish I was half the man you’ve turned out to be. I’m proud to look at you and say that I know former NCW World Champion, Andrew Jacobsen.
But don’t let that be your biggest title, overcome Ryan Blade, become the Man of Steel. Become the Imperial Champion, and never stop reaching for the stars.
You can do this. You can beat me, you can beat Blade, you can beat the world.
I need to use this match for my own advantage, to beat the biggest underdog to ever take down Xander.
You took his world title, now he wants to take my head.
I need to rise above myself, rise above this doubt, and the obviously disadvantages.
Obviously, and I never thought I’d say this.
I need to be a little more like you Andrew.
I hope one day you can forgive me for how it all ended at NCW, and once again, call me your friend.”
Xavier stands outside the doors of the CrossRoads gymnasium, DeMarcus stands there with a ridiculous smile across his face.
“This is some impressive building Xavier, I’m glad my son is here and not out there on the Streets with the rift-raft, plus you know what it takes to be great. I mean you didn’t quite succeed in the basketball world, but you’re a global star in wrestling and well okay your movies didn’t do to well, but you know enough to help my son not fail!”
He pats Xaviers back, Cross’s lip begins to twitch out of annoyance, its obviously he doesn’t like this guy, period, but the man is so oblivious to the fact of anything other than himself, Xavier looks up to see Javi walking by himself, towards them.
“My boy!”
DeMarcus is obviously being a little more overly fatherly, which puts Javi off for a moment, as he approaches the two men. Javi has a nervous, but serious expression as he looks at Xavier, then his father, then back at Xavier, who nods at him.
“Dad...I have something...I need to...tell you.”
“Oh my boy, you can tell me anything...Anything!”
“I’m gay.”
