Why do we fall?
So that we can learn to pick ourselves up. And I’ve been falling a lot lately. Fell thanks to Ryan Blade, thanks to my own arrogance, thanks to…well, a lot of different things. Fell into my old habits. Self-destructive habits. I haven’t heard from Danielle beyond some clinical check-ups for the last few weeks. But just because I got my bell rung, that doesn’t mean I didn’t do a little checking up of my own.
Hey Blade, how’s the jaw?
More to the point, I’m rested and I’m ready to go. Now, does that mean I’m 100%? I don’t know. I just want to get back in the ring and win a bit of my dignity back. Xavier, you pinned me. I can’t change that. Even Ryan Blade charging in and squeezing the air out of my lungs doesn’t change the fact that you pinned me to the canvas to win that belt you’ve got around your waist. I won’t even take the out that so many others would, that it was a multi-man match. It’s just the nature of the beast.
What I take issue with is what you keep saying: that I can’t get the job done unless I’m willing to get dirty. I would have thought I’d proven by now that there isn’t any job I can’t get done. I’ve won title after title, and I've done it all without having to corrupt myself. When I tried? It didn't work. I only got back to success when I came back to what made me in the first place: athleticism. Skill. Honest, hard work. That's the foundation of my career. It's what's brought me success. And it's what will bring me success.
I know I can beat Ryan Blade. And I know I can beat you, Xavier. It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of how. When. Where. It's a matter of being able to clear the distractions from my head, put lurking predators out of mind and shine with only the intensity that the North Star can. Might not be tonight. But it'll happen, I can promise you that.
The North Star...do you know why that's such an iconic image, Xavier? Do you know why it's instantly recognizable? Because it's always there. It's always shining, a beacon in the night to those who seek it. It lights the way for those who are lost, and gives them hope. That's what I dream of being. That's what I aspire to do. Even if I lose...if I push just one person to strive a little more, I've done my job.
Good luck. And may the best man win.
