IWF.com caught up with former Ruby Champion Mercedes Vargas in Long Beach, California ahead of Monday's Sacrifice in this exclusive interview.

IWF.COM: Mercedes, you vowed to come out of Survival of the Fittest with a victory over Emma Danielson, but you came up short this past Sunday. Any thoughts on what happened in your match?
MERCEDES VARGAS: You know, I heard this great knock-knock joke the other day. Let me set it up.
IWF.COM: Uh, OK. Go for it.
MERCEDES VARGAS: Knock-knock.
IWF.COM: Who's there?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Emma.
IWF.COM: Emma who?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Exactly. I think the better question is does anyone care that she won Sunday? Will anyone even remember? I don't think so. I will say that's it's about time she proved she was worth a damn. So, if there's anyone who should take credit for her finally getting her first win in forever, it's yours truly. You're welcome.
IWF.COM: Nevertheless, Emma is next in line to challenge for the Shieldmaiden Championship. What were your thoughts on IWF Head of Diamonds Division Kathleen Conway, someone you know quite well since your days in NCW, congratulating Emma following the contendership match?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Well, let me put it this way. Old hat, new surroundings. See, I don't know if you know this, maybe you do, but Kat had the same position she does now when she was in charge of the NCW Starlets and while she did an admirable job alongside her husband, you kinda had an idea that she's been, I don't know, heard and not seen lately, save for a groundbreaking announcement or accompanying The Ace for the odd match or two. At Survival of the Fittest, after the match between Emma and I, Kat was seen but she didn't have to say a word. Her round of applause told me everything I needed to know.
With Emma, it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. It's just too bad Kat's seal of approval is going to go to waste and her golden opportunity is only going to turn out to be a wasted opportunity next week. Plus, she's teaming with Crystal again against Alexis and Esperanza tonight? If I recall, last time she and Crystal teamed up, they got their ass kicked against Paige Garcia and I. What chance do they have this time? Chalk up another win for Alexis and another title defense for Kayla.
IWF.COM: Speaking of Alexis and Kayla, they and the rest of the Champion Team were victorious in the Extinction Event tag team elimination match.
MERCEDES VARGAS: Aren't you forgetting something?
IWF.COM: As you rightly predicted.
MERCEDES VARGAS: Thank you. Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Esperanza and Fiona proved not only are they NOT ready for prime time, but while they may have the heart of a champion, they will never BE one any time soon after a performance like that. And, yeah, the rest of the Challenging Team got destroyed in short order, before, during and after the bell. And the best part? You can see this and much, much, more on the IWF Network for only 9.99. Love it!
IWF.COM: Uh, thanks for the plug there, Mercedes. Let's turn back to you for a moment. You said that you were going to top what you said last year at Survival of the Fittest with another message? Where was that?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Excuse me? I don't work on YOUR schedule, I work on mine. I just didn't feel like talking after my match. Plus, we were at high altitude. Do you have any idea what does to your body? That's the last time I'm going to Washington.
IWF.COM: What are your thoughts on Roberto Verona's “Adapt or Perish” mandate?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Wait, I thought that was always the law of the land? Obviously, it's being enforced this time. And it's about time. The ratio of active to former talent is pretty unstable right now and the company has suffered. Those who are here are going to have to step up or get stepped on if they want to be here. Even the once proud Diamonds division is on life support, and it doesn't help that a fluke and a fraud are leading it. It's embarrassing.
IWF.COM: You've been highly critical of both Alexis and Kayla during their title reigns. Has their recent defenses change your mind, if any, about their status in the division?
MERCEDES VARGAS: The Fluke and Asterisk haven't changed my mind about nothing. I've said it before and I'll say it again: it doesn't matter how many title defenses they rack up, they are who they are: a fluke and a fraud. Nothing lasts forever. They better enjoy their reigns while it last because someone is going to beat them eventually.
