WHY ROB DIAMOND MAY HAVE FINALLY REACHED TRUE INFAMY
By Damien Sparks
A couple of months ago I had the distinct honour of being granted an exclusive sit down interview with IWF COO and current reigning Imperial Champion Roberto Verona and I asked him just how far he thought the company could go in its ever increasing desire to blur the lines between scripted entertainment and reality. Roberto Verona did not give me a definitive answer on that night, but Rob Diamond may have if his words on this past Monday Night's Sacrifice are any indication of the direction this company is heading.
The promo in question unexpectedly came at the conclusion of the main event Tag Team match when a frustrated Rob Diamond grabbed a microphone and began to cut what the fans are now referring to as the "True Diamond promo" in which for the first time on IWF television he openly referenced a wrestling promotion other than NCW - PWA.
The significance of this cannot be downplayed given the general policy within IWF that expressly states that only NCW history can be acknowledged and referenced on live IWF broadcasts, and even then only when deemed necessary. The fact that Rob Diamond was allowed the creative freedom to colour outside the lines for the sake of basing his promo in reality probably says a lot about his standing backstage with the company.
For the fans it is even more significant as the moment represents a true transition in the evolution of the Rob Diamond character.
Up until last Monday, Rob Diamond found his popularity almost exclusively through being a crotch-chopping goof-ball who would call himself Infamous almost in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, but Sacrifice allowed us to see a more serious third dimension to the man. In many respects such a welcome change in persona seems long overdue given the history of the character.
It would seem then that the Superstars and Diamonds of the Imperial Wrestling Federation truly are being given their opportunities to step up and shine.
If this new company initiative continues to inspire the wrestlers backstage and as a result we the audience get to see many more instances like #TrueDiamond continue to trend and catch fire amongst typically sceptical and jaded wrestling fans all around the world, then it can only mean that this business and this company will thrive going into 2016 and beyond.
