Imperial Wrestling Federation.
It has always been the goal.
The company has had such a showing of Irish superstars, and Gaelic ones all around. From the likes of Spike Kane and Carrick O’Connor to Fiona McFly, and Hooligan. IWF has been a home for those who have usually found it quite difficult to get into this business, or more so….to break through.
So when I was offered a developmental contract? I was the happiest I've ever been.
I was one step closer to living my dream, I was one step closer to emulating those names and bringing pride to my country. I was one step closer to being an IWF Diamond.
Training wasn't what most of us expected, what with IWF splashing out on its own performance centre? The facilities available to us were second to none….the trainers we had teaching us everything from the basics, to promo class? I don't think there is any competition in the world….but the day has finally come.
Shea O’Hara finally becomes a Diamond.
….and Diamonds are Forever.
~~~
My palms were sweating already. I'd barely walked into the building, but people were already giving me knowing glances. They knew. Maybe they knew more than they were letting on, but something was in the air. Kathleen Conway had asked me to come see her. My heart was pounding in my chest.
“Hey, I have a two o’clock with Mrs Conway?”
I could feel my voice shaking as I spoke. The receptionist barely looked up from her computer screen, which didn't exactly help the nerves.
“Name?”
Wow. Manners much?
“Umm...Shea. Shea O’Hara?”
Suddenly I felt very self conscious. Did I wear the right dress? Are my shoes stupid? Am I showing too much cleavage? Am I not showing enough? Again, I notice my sweaty palms.
“Go on up, third floor. She's expecting you.”
Gee….who peed in her Latte? Heh….I'm so funny. Wait, wait. Third floor, right? Sheesh….a lot of effort to fire someone right. Cause that's totally what's about to happen. Maybe I haven't developed quickly enough? ….maybe I'm just not good enough?
*ding*
Ooh, these elevators are well posh! Ooh...quick, mirror! Yeah, dress is fine. Hair is...ugh, hair. What does it matter anyway if Conway is just gonna throw me to the curb?
*ding*
Ok….ok….okokokok. When did it get so hard to breath in here? Oh my God...I have boob sweat. Eeew.
“Hey, you must be Miss O’Hara”
Holy crud she really was waiting for me. She's standing there looking all sophisticated and she just has an aura of power!
“Yeah, umm...yes, Mrs Conway. Nice to meet you in person”
I tried to wipe my hand on the back of my dress, get rid of the sweat before she took it and shook it, with a smile on her face too. Ok, it'd be really nice if my heart calmed down now.
“I'm sorry to drag you out to the corporate office, I've just got a ton of work to do building up to our Diamonds show.”
Oh boy was I aware of that.
“It's actually why I asked you to be here today. I'm sure you're aware that the December show is annually the Diamonds Are Former event, and well….we only want the best of the best showing up and representing the company.”
Oh wow, way to soften the blow...suck it up Shea….here it comes.
“Which is why we've decided to call you up from developmental, to debut at the show!”
Could this day get any wor-wait….holy crap. Ohmigodohmigod….did she just...WHAAAAT!?
“I can tell that you weren't expecting that?”
Oh man, I'm welling up. I don't want to….so….freaking….happy!
“It's not that it's….wow, I thought you were going to fire me!”
I can feel the tears rolling down my face, I'm not usually a crier, and happy tears, really? That's a thing?
“Don't be so silly Shea. You're a hot prospect. The first diamond to come through the new Performance Centre. It's going to be quite a ride from here….”
She just...she gave me a hug? Oh man. This is seriously the best day ever!
“Thank you so much Mrs Conway. I promise you. You won't regret this!”
She flashed me a sly grin, but my heart is just completely pounding.
“I certainly hope not…”
I literally skipped down the Hall. I….I am officially a Diamond! Hell yeah! I'm going to debut at a pay per view! Woooooooo!
Still…..I better shower cause that sweat is getting bad.
I get that to you, Katie, this is probably a throwaway match. Something nice and simple to coax you into getting that fire in your belly once again. A quick match on a pay per view card against an up and comer that nobody expects to win. You're the favourite by far, I mean I have no roster experience, so to speak. Only my time in IWF developmental. I don't have years of experience under my belt, and I haven't bounced from federation to federation, I'm not a so-called “Indy darling” like some on the roster claim to be, and I most certainly am not the long lost child of one of IWF’s older generation.
I am, in all shapes and forms...a breath of fresh air.
There's some terrible parody of an Irish Chick walking around, and she's doing my country a massive injustice….sort of how Jersey Shore does to America, and the Westboro Baptist Church do to Christians….I think I'm making my point? I'm something that the Diamonds division needs, I'm real, I'm 100% organic. There is nothing fake or manufactured about me….I'm simply a redheaded girl from Cork who's come to kick some ass, and make a name for herself!
Who else gets to debut at the biggest….no. Only. Diamonds exclusive pay per view?
The thing is Katie, we’re not so different. We’re both from across the pond, we're both pretty new on the roster, and heck, we both like Paramore. Maybe we could end up being friends? I'm not one to take the way people act in a match as a significant impression of them as a person, so hey, anything could happen, right? The big difference between us though? Is the level of commitment to this job, to this way of life! You see, to me, there is no plan B. There is nowhere else to go if this falls through. I am here, one hundred percent to make it or break it in the Diamonds division. I want my name to belong up there with the likes of Ana Valentine-Jonee, Jessica Reed, Amber Richards, and Eternity. I am not a flash in the pan, and I won't go away if I fall at the first hurdle.
I will get up.
I will go again.
They have a saying for that, they call us the “fighting Irish” well let me tell you something Katie, I will bring the fight of your life come Diamonds are Forever, I'll give you a match that you won't even be prepared for…..I will debut, and I will give the world what they've been crying out for. Then? Well….
The only way is up.
