IWF.com caught up with Mercedes Vargas earlier today in Los Angeles ahead of Diamonds are Forever 2016 tonight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles for this exclusive interview.
IWF.COM: How did you spend the holidays and New Year's?
MERCEDES VARGAS: It was festive, quiet. I saw the the ball drop on TV. Before that, I usually made it out to see it live. Last time, I got to saw Psy perform live in 2013, so that was fun.
IWF.COM: Did you see the IWF awards show last night? What was the most surprising event from last night's award show?
MERCEDES VARGAS: I saw the show, yeah. Most surprising event? Outside of the award winners, I'll have to say Mike Laszlo threatening the winner of the Diamond of the Year.
IWF.COM: Do you think he'll actually go through with it, knowing that Eternity nabbed the honor for the first time?
MERCEDES VARGAS: I hope not, for his and Alexis' sake. Oh, and the back of all milk cartons everywhere. He's in no condition to threaten anybody, let alone getting in a fight.
IWF.COM: Let's go back to the final Sacrifice of 2015. Did you expected handing Kate Steele her first victory thirteen days ago?
MERCEDES VARGAS: A broken clock is right twice a day. Kate got lucky and all things come to an end. She's given her fans – the two of them – little to cheer for during her IWF career, so her victory was a little Christmas gift despite her career being a lost cause, much like her.
IWF.COM: Do you think she will be the next one to suffer from the Vargas Effect?
MERCEDES VARGAS: It sure is leaning that way, isn't it? [Laughs]
IWF.COM: Looking back at the past year, 2015 is probably a year you would like to forget. You held the record for longest Ruby Championship reign for 10 months until Firenze Everett surpassed the record in April. You ended up with the most loses among the active Diamonds roster [27] and the second-least amount of wins [6], not to mention you own the record for the most overall loses al-time [38]. You also had two opportunities at the Diamonds Championship, fell short in the Heiress to the Throne Tournament, and in contendership matches for the Ruby Championship and the Iron Maiden match for the second year in a row. Would you consider 2015 a failure, all things considered?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Well, yes and no. I prefer to look at it as taking the bad with the good. I did break two records in 2015 [most Sacrifice appearances in a single year on September 14, passing Amber Richards' 19 set in 2014 and finishing the year with 26 and the record for most TV/PPV appearances in a single year on November 2, surpassing Richards' 30 also set in 2014, setting the new mark with 34], I've been with IWF now for two years officially and while there were some of the other girls who were taking time off or injured or was simply here for a cup of coffee, I was still out there on Sacrifice and pay-per-view. I never accomplished my goal, but winning the Shieldmaiden and Diamonds Championships in 2016 are still on my to-do list. That hasn't changed.
IWF.COM: Fans will be in for a surprise tonight at Diamonds are Forever as you're not booked at this year's event, which is a first. You've appeared at the first two events in 2013 and 2014. Some say that making an IWF card is a lot like the NFL's Pro Bowl. Obviously, some stars deserve to be there. Do you feel you got snubbed?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Snubbed? No, not really. At the end of the day, guess what? I'm still undefeated. Outside of Eternity, Alexis and Kayla, no one else on this year's card can say that. So, no, I don't feel bad about it. Girls like The Garcia twins and Esperanza Serranto have an opportunity to make 2016 their year. What better time than the first pay-per-view of the new year?
IWF.COM: Any chance we'll get to see you drop by Staples Center?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Much as I would love to, I'm afraid it's not in the cards. It just so happens that I have plans for January 3 as I'll be in Vegas, wrestling that night. I know LA is less than four hours by car and an hour by flight, but, really, I don't need to be there. I know it's' going to be a good show and everyone will have a great time.
IWF.COM: Predictions for tonight's pay-per-view?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Kayla Richards will probably win, and cheat, again, to retain the Shieldmaiden, no matter who Emma Danielson has cheerleading for her at ringside, The Garcia Twins get their first pay-per-view win over Esperanza Serranto, Kate Steele loses to the new girl, Eternity wins against Fiona McFly – as if that's going to be any contest - and Alexis gets the night off from defending the Diamonds Championship, unfortunately.
IWF.COM: Finally, do you have any New Year's Resolutions or things you would like to see in IWF in 2016?
MERCEDES VARGAS: Instant replay. I hear all the cool sports leagues are doing it There's been one too many controversial matches in 2015 – Stevie Wonder can see that some of those matches should have been called back or restarted. I think it's time for the officials to be held accountable for their actions and instant replay can help in avoiding a lot of headaches in the future. Now is that too much to ask?
