TWO-ON-ONE HANDICAP MATCH MATCH
The Garcia Twins (Paige and Sara Garcia) vs Esperanza Serranto
----------------------------------------------------------
Background: Ever since Esperanza Serranto returned to IWF back in October, she was adamant to prove that her last appearance during the Diamond Search competition over the summer in 2014 would be different. She proved as much with a debut win against Mercedes Vargas, but following that is where Serranto would face the gallows of competition, developing an intense rivalry with Kayla Richards over the Shieldmaiden Championship and falling short each time. After that, Serranto turned her attention to Alexis Caffrey and the Diamonds Championship. Little did she know, Caffrey had friends in high places and soon Serranto was seeing double trouble as the Garcia Twins aligned themselves with the Diamonds Champion and coordinated a series of beatdowns on the determined challenger. Now, Serranto must face beat both Paige and Sara to get her hands on Alexis for the Diamonds Championship in the main event. Fail here, and Caffrey will have the night off on the first pay-per-view of the year. Can the Compton, California native win to get a second match this night?
The Match: For a short match, it was perfectly executed by The Garcia Twins who threw away a chance to win their first PPV match in their careers, but nonetheless, maybe that was by design.
Thoughts: Serranto gets by the Garcias, but has the damage already been done after two devastating All About Me's by the dastardly duo? We'll find out later in the main event. As for the match itself, I enjoyed it. Never let it be said that Paige and Sara aren't smart. Coming from the crowd was genius and definitely took Serranto by surprise leading her into a false sense of security. Serranto fought bravely, but facing a 2-on-1 disadvantage is a tough sell for anybody to overcome. Luckily, Serranto didn't have to.
----------------------------------------------------------
SINGLES MATCH
Kate Steele vs Shea O'Hara
----------------------------------------------------------
Background: Kate Steele competes in her second match following her in-ring return upset over Mercedes Vargas on the go-home Sacrifice on December 21. It was the Berkshire, England native first match in over a year since being pinned by Ana Valentine-Jones during a five-way match on November 10, 2014. Even more historic, Steele won her first match ever in her career, having a record of 0-15-1 record previously. Now, Steele looks to carry her momentum into Diamonds are Forever against a relative unknown. Making her IWF debut is Shea O'Hara from Cork, Ireland, who looks to get her career off to a promising start, but only if she can beat the confident Steele. Who will win in this battle of UK natives?
The Match: A nice exchange of technical prowess from both Diamonds who gave the fans quite a show in a relatively good, clean match. The Red Riot pulls off quite the upset over the veteran Steele.
Thoughts: Always nice to see a newcomer joining the company, and already you have to love the vibrant and energy of O'Hara. Some newcomers had growing pains in their first year (Kayla Richards), others have rocketed to surprising success (Eliza). If the revamped IWF Academy can produce future stars like O'Hara, the Diamonds division will left in good hands. Should be interesting to see how O'Hara does in her next match, a triple threat against Emma Danielson and the Diamonds Champion herself, Alexis Caffrey this Monday on Sacrifice. Meanwhile, a bitter defeat for “The Siren” Kate Steele. She'll be in tag team action with husband, Teddy Steele againt, well, the other Irish Diamond in the division in Fiona McFly and husband Jack Gaither.
----------------------------------------------------------
SINGLES MATCH
Fiona McFly vs Eternity
w/Kathleen Conway as Special Guest Referee
w/Emma Danielson as Special Guest Enforcer
----------------------------------------------------------
Background: In a lot of way Fiona McFly is a world's away from her husband, Jack Gaither. But what Fiona has been through over the course of 2015 and since her return in October isn't any different from what Jack Gaither went through in his rivalry with Jake “The Ace” Conway. Fiona's ongoing mission to bring fun back to Diamonds division has been met with disgust and ridicule from her fellow Diamonds and McFly has gone through quite the gauntlet since her return in October, stuck in a endless quagmire of a months-long slide since June of 2015. Not to mention getting under the skin of Diamonds Commissioner Kathleen Conway. Though Fiona's idea of fun and her opponent in Eternity's idea of fun are two ENTIRELY different things, not to mention that Conway will be in the middle of the action as the special guest referee while Emma Danielson will have her eyes peeled as the special guest enforcer. Can Fiona end her ugly slide at Eternity's expense or will Sister Sorrow's return to Diamonds are Forever for the first since 2013 deny her?
The Match: You have the plucky underdog Fiona versus the complete monster in Eternity plus the diabolical Kathleen Conway and her hired muscle in Emma Danielson and all played their parts well. Even against insurmountable odds, Fiona kept fighting and fighting, but Kathleen and Emma proved to be too much to overcome. Fiona got fired up following that slap, but that woke up the complete bitch in Kat and she made Fiona pay for it. Wow. You have to feel sorry for McFly as her career has gotten that much worse.
Thoughts: For me, this is my match of the night. The writer wrote this perfectly. Kathleen Conway played the biased referee and had the crowd eating out of her hand with her actions. A conflicted Emma had no choice but to follow orders or risk her shot at her rematch for the Shieldmaiden. And poor Fiona was the proverbial pinball as she was battered around between Conway, Danielson, and Eternity who was toying with her opponent all night long. Following this match, Her match with Eternity is mercilessly over, but her nightmare unfortunately continues...
----------------------------------------------------------
SHIELDMAIDEN CHAMPIONSHIP
No Disqualification
Kayla Richards© vs Emma Danielson
----------------------------------------------------------
Background: Emma Danielson was given this rematch following the controversial actions of Kayla Richards in their last singles match after Richards pulled the old Guerrero chair special, leading to the win by disqualification and another title defense. Emma was livid following that decision and went postal on the official of that match. Days following that match, an article on IWF.com reported that Emma would not be reprimanded for her actions, by way of Kat Conway, which led to various Diamonds questioning the move by the Commissioner. Not only that, but Danielson would get an immediate rematch at the pay-per-view. Well, if Kayla Richards was concerned about defending the Shieldmaiden for the second time in three weeks, she wasn't showing it. The Anti-Christ of the Diamonds Division has defeated all comers and Emma would be just another footnote in her three-month reign. Will Diamonds are Forever be the breakthrough for Emma Danielon in her first match at this event and win her first IWF championship? Or will this be just another Sunday night for Kayla Richards in her fifth defense?
The Match: Kayla used her quickness and speed to her advantage against her much stronger opponent. Aside from a brief execution of her power, it was a miscue that led to Kayla taking advantage and putting Danielson away, ending her dreams of a Shieldmaiden reign.
Thoughts: This was a solid match between the two and because they know each other so well. Emma earlier encounter with Fiona may have done her in, but credit her for giving Kayla quite a battle, but in the end it just wasn't enough to put away the dominant champion. Emma will have to chalk up this loss and com back better next time. Speaking of next time, Kayla will be in action against familiar opponents Crystal Millar and Mercedes Vargas in a non-title triple threat match.
----------------------------------------------------------
DIAMONDS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Alexis Caffrey © vs. Esperanza Serranto
----------------------------------------------------------
Background: Esperanza Serranto got through one obstacle. Now she has to get through another one in the dominant Alexis Caffrey, defending her title for the third time. And yet somehow maybr she didn't wan't the night off after all. Emma Danielson failed to end Kayla Richard's title reign. Can Serranto walk out of Los Angeles the new Diamonds Champion and finally end Caffrey's reign?
The Match: Match? What match? It lasted barely two minutes, if that. No thanks to the Garcia Twins providing the distraction, Alexis took advantage and it was all academic for the three-count, the pin and the win.
Thoughts: Wow. This was like Survival of the Fittest all over again for Serranto, but this night could not have ended any worse for her. The wrestling gods were cruel once again to her and McFly as this night ended with the Diamonds Championship failing to change hands for the first time in Diamonds are Forever in history. If Alexis Caffrey wanted to avoid controversy during her reign, well, this match won't quiet the rumors. Not after this.
Final Thoughts: I'm giving the show an 7 out of 10. Seeing Eternity and Alexis Caffrey, who also competed in the first ever Diamonds are Forever event and Kayla Richards, the only returnee from the 2014 version was nice. Shea O'Hara had a pretty enjoyable debut and a good match against Kate Steele, and Kayla and Emma had a short, but enjoyable tussle over the Shieldmaiden, but the opening and closing matches were tough to watch. That the handler for Esperanza failed to RP makes me a sad panda as I expected a good RP battle for the main event, but alas, twas not to be.
