[Mercedes Vargas stares at her watch for the fifth time in as many minutes. She didn't know what was worse, the three and a half hour flight from Los Angeles, or sitting in the waiting room for what seemed like an eternity. The Argentine, dressed in a dark business suit, finished reading a travel magazine from a month ago. Employees wander aimlessly though the building at five minute intervals, some helplessly staring back at her. She doesn't return their smiles. She gets halfway through another magazine before her name was finally called. Mercedes stands for about half a minute, expels a short breath, and makes her way across the room. The linoleum floor reflects the sunlight from the large windows. Above was an atrium, which reached several feet up, the apex arching into a glazed skylight. She reaches the desk where the receptionist scribbles something in an appointment calendar. She looks up at her with a small smile.]
.::SECRETARY::..
Apologize for the wait, Miss Vargas. How can I help you?
.::MERCEDES::..
Well, could you tell me if this Purgatory? I've had surgeries that didn't take this long.
.::SECRETARY::..
This must be your first visit here then. When you work for a multi-billion dollar professional wrestling promotion, you'll find that a secretary's job is never done.
.::MERCEDES::..
Right. Anyway, I got an e-mail that told me to come here to pick up something?
[The phone rings and the secretary takes the call. She nods curtly and sends the call to voicemail. She searches her workstation before settling on a manila folder, which she hands to Mercedes. She opens it and skims the contents, chuckles and shakes her head.]
.::MERCEDES::..
Um, what is this?
.::SECRETARY::..
Exactly what it says on the tin. Your official contract for the final match of your review period, by orders of Mrs. Conway.
.::MERCEDES::..
You're kidding!
.::SECRETARY::..
Afraid not. The match stipulations are clearly outlined in the contract.
.::MERCEDES::..
Okay. Is Roberto Verona around?
.::SECRETARY::..
He stepped out and probably won't be back until later today. If you have a message for him, you can leave it with me.
.::MERCEDES::..
Just tell him I stopped by.
.::SECRETARY::..
I will do that. Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful day.
[Mercedes spins on her heels and walks away without a backwards glance as the secretary gets back to her work.]

[In a matter of days, four challengers will be after the same thing in the co-main at Danger Zone in what will be a very crowded match. But that won't be Mercedes' problem, because her wish is about to come true. Although her prediction of the Shieldmaiden match did not come to pass, Vargas predicts that the winner of the Diamonds Championship match at Danger Zone will be anyone but the current champion.]

IWF DIAMOND
My crystal ball isn't right all the time, but I have a good feeling there's going to be a new Diamonds Champion on Sunday. Call it a hunch, call it a premonition. The Era of Caffrey is over, and not a moment too soon.
[To express how much she was looking forward to the title change, she lets out a breath.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
Sigh of relief.
[Vargas was better to have held her breath instead. The Diamonds Championship has yet to change hands at Danger Zone the past two events. Ana Jones was in both matches, having lost to Amber Richards at the inaugural event in 2014, thus ruining her Ruby Championship cash-in, and retaining the championship last year against both Vargas and Caffrey in the first-ever triple threat Last Diamond Standing match. Still, she notes the dreaded Vargas Effect, which proved fatal the last time Caffrey defeated her in a non-title match before eventually losing the title to Eternity at Legacy six days later.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
History has a way of repeating itself, you know? Her reign is done. I guarantee it.
[But just because she expects a new champion to walk out of Omaha Sunday doesn't mean the choices will revive the division. As of right now, Caffrey and the co-number one contenders who were added to the match, the former two-time champion Eternity and Eliza, are the favorites to win at Danger Zone. With election season in the United States in full swing, Vargas was asked on her take on who she would vote for if IWF were to elect a Diamonds Champion between the three.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
If IWF were to elect a Diamonds Champion and Alexis, Eternity and Eliza were the candidates, that would be a no-win situation. That we're suffering through a second Caffrey reign now is like giving an assassin another bullet for their gun because they missed you the first time. If you survived the first two reigns of Eternity, sorry, but you're still aren't getting a lousy t-shirt. A third reign would be worse. And an Eliza reign isn't much different than the three of her niece or her ex-girlfriend. That's a dumpster fire right there.
Whoever wins, we ALL lose.
[The former IWF Ruby Champion has been frustrated with the promotion for months, especially with Head of the Diamonds Division Kathleen Conway in what has lead into a full-blown feud between the former friends. Vargas has continued to mock and ridicule Conway's authority at every turn, with some of her comments being petty and demeaning. As punishment for her continued criticism of Conway, Vargas was placed on a six-match performance review, which after a month concludes at the pay-per-view. Part of Vargas' frustration has come from the booking of the Diamonds Division as of late. She starts by talking about comments from Jessica Reed in the week of their match back on February 15.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
So I've been noted as being bitter, disgruntled and outspoken. Awesome. Look, I'm not in a position where I feel like I need to be pushed around and take whatever is given to me. If I don't like something I'm going to say something, and I don't give a damn who likes it. I don't care about the money, so they can fine me and take away bonuses all they want, but that isn't going to shut me up.
Jessica Reed talked about Kat hating to see talent go to waste. Well, how come Sunshine Sparkles, Mirsada Tanović, and Isabella Maldini are getting paid to sit on their hands at home? Why wasn't the Ruby Championship vacated when Firenze Everett, six months into her reign, held on the title for an additional two months while she was still injured? Why, oh why, have the last five Diamonds that came through here before Shea and Avery lasted anywhere from one night to three weeks to three months since she was named Head of the Diamonds Division over a year ago? I think inquiring minds want to know.
[Vargas believes that Conway is on a power trip and calls her abuse of power “offensive”, citing the punishments of Esperanza Serranto, who was subsequently fired, and Crystal Millar. She feels that the Diamonds Division won't reach its true potential unless there's a change and remains steadfast in her vote of no confidence in Conway's authority going forward.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
Maybe it's me but I think she's running the division into the ground. For someone with a degree in Criminal Justice, some of the things I've seen is downright criminal. I think it's time someone gives a performance review to Kathleen Elizabeth Conway: She has failed in her position as the Head of the Diamonds Division and I think she should be impeached or at least resign to save what little pride she has left.
[Vargas, however, still has to honor her contract, including her upcoming match. At Danger Zone, Vargas competes in a compelling fatal four-way match, which also includes Kayla Richards, Avery Barnes and Emma Danielson. While Vargas would like to think of herself as a thorn in the side of Richards, it hasn't been easy to stay that way after getting crushed in every one of their encounters, including their only singles match at Metamorphosis. The two have been at odds ever since the younger Richards joined the promotion and Vargas was especially critical of her throughout her title reign, which she continues to do so.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
If I can't win matches and if I can't win titles, then I'm pushing buttons. I know how to push her buttons, and that’s without using the manual.
If she wants to bring up my Ruby title reign from over a year ago, I think it's fair game that I bring up the fact that she won her title by being a fraud. She's angry, she's pissed off, why? Because she knows I'm in the right and that she cheated to win.
Kayla, like her sister, has no conscience.
[Vargas continues her scathing remarks on the former champion, believing that she was well deserving of the backlash.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
I'm not the one who was desperate enough to have to use brass to win a title, okay? If she had any kind of common decency, she would have denied that win. She would have done the right thing and realize what a cheap win that was. For her to accept a win like that, for her to stoop that low? She should be ashamed for coming out there week after week and claiming she won on her own merits. The fans, the other Diamonds and IWF may recognize her as the inaugural Shieldmaiden, but not in my eyes. The record book may state she's the first champion, but not in my book. At the end of the day, my name doesn't have an asterisk next to it. Unlike her, I never cheated to win my first title, and I was never pinned or submitted for it either.
If she didn't feel like she deserved the label of being a fraud, if she's as good as she claims, than maybe, just maybe, she should have thought twice before doing something so stupid. But then again, when you're a Richards that can't be helped, especially when you were partially responsible for helping “The Fluke” win the main title in the first place.
Sometimes it's what you don't do that makes you who you are.
[Regardless of what happens at Danger Zone, Vargas stresses the one thing that will haunt Kayla for the rest of her career and vows that she will never recover from it.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
Kayla mentioned that me getting a Diamonds champion match [at October Revolution], was like sending the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl. Well, Kayla and her sister, like the Patriots, like New England, are serial cheaters. No matter how many titles they win or the people she beat or the number of title defenses, their legacy will always be tarnished as a cheater. She will never live it down or recover from this. This will stick with her forever.
[Vargas ends her remarks with a word of warning to Richards.]
M E R C E D E S ♦ V A R G A S
IWF DIAMOND
Kayla Richards should be the last person giving out advice. If she dares to open her mouth and criticize me, she might want to check her own history and her past. She wants to make this about victories and title defenses and length of title reigns. No. I call things as I see it and I know how to call her out on her bullshit because unlike her and her sister, I'm not a hypocrite or a fraud when the cameras are rolling, see? This isn't an act. This isn't cosplay. This is all real. What you see is what you get.
So word to the wise - next time she wants to embarrass herself, be ready to face the consequences.
[In a match that features the always tough Danielson and upstart Barnes, not to mention title matches, a spot in the Iron Maiden match and Vargas' career on the line, the rivalry between Vargas and Richards could possibly steal the show at Danger Zone. Sunday will be filled with fireworks and this match will be one of them. Victory, Vargas says, won't be easy, but it will be worth it. And if she fails?]

Then I guess I'll be going out in a blaze of glory.

People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
I didn't know people would care about me that much. When you have special guests commentating on your matches and making you the envy of their conversation, it's easy to let the popularity get to your head. I must be the most famous nobody in IWF history having lasted this long and still being on the roster. Nowadays, only a scant few remain from the Training Grounds days, the one Diamond Search contestant lasted a brief spell before she got fired, and chances are you'll need a extra pair of hands to count the laundry list of names from NCW that breezed through the doors of this company.
See, I've been told repeatedly about respecting my superiors and my betters but where, oh where are they? Ana Valentine has long since hanged up her boots...Amber Richards hasn't been seen in over three months...Eternity? A sideshow attraction, if you're lucky enough to see her at your kid's 6-year old birthday party. Jessica Reed is only good to pop ratings and pay-per-views now.
All in all, life hasn't been all that great for my superiors and my betters, has it? And truth be told, I don't think it's going to get better. Kayla already lost her girlfriend, her credibility and her title. And as for Alexis? Hope her title reign was worth it, because she's going to be outgunned on Sunday and she knows it. Not to mention that she's going to be a widow that night when Mike Laszlo gets buried six feet.
You read it here first.
Speaking of firsts ...Avery Barnes debuting in her first pay-per-view match in IWF. And of course she's on a roll and of course she has the most momentum out of everyone in this match, but if you know me, you know that nothing is short lived.
Not even newcomers to Imperial.
So what makes Avery any different than an Esperanza Serranto or a Firenze Everett or any of the other flavors of the month who didn't have the ovaries to compete in the concrete jungle that is the Diamonds division? It goes beyond win-loss-draw-records and title wins. It's a matter of if, not when, they will end up on the next IWF.com article mentioning their release, and no one will bat an eye.
I'm not even going to wish Avery success because who hasn't beaten Kate Steele and Fiona “Irish Poodle” McFly anyway? Those are not wins I'd be proud to mention at my next autograph signing let alone make on camera. Sunday, Avery Barnes will be a “Little Mouse” among big cats now.
This isn't Salem, Oregon anymore.
See, Avery, you may be the newest girl on the block, but mark my words, honey, Sunday is where you're going to have to prove yourself in the division. You have three other girls, including Emma who you also faced in that triple threat with Kate, gunning for you.
And trust me, unlike Fiona, we're not so nice. So, please, do yourself a favor. Step away from the Easy-Bake Oven, Mrs. Fields. It's going to take a lot more than a batch of cookies to walk out of this match with your hand raised. You admitted to coming up short in title opportunities before in your career. Unfortunately for you, your first title match in IWF is going to be awhile because it won't be happening at High Stakes.
Hey, but don't worry. You'll get over it, somehow. There's nothing a good cry, Netflix, and your best friends Ben & Jerry's can't fix.
And as for Emma? The last time you and I were in the same ring, you wanted nothing to do with me. Said you wanted to throw the gasoline onto that fire and watch me burn at the stake. Well, the last few weeks, you've been keeping your head above water. But how much longer are you going to gasp for air before you go under? Right now, you're about three seconds away from taking that last breath. Truth is, I don't think your heart's in it anymore. Nighthawk and Andy's releases has taken a heavy toll on you and it's clearly obvious that you'll fold your tent, again, this Sunday. I'm not buying the pep talk, Em. You don't care anymore. You're done.
That won't be me. I've got everything to gain and even more to lose in a match that has everything riding on a win. And I don't give a damn who I have to beat in that match or the reward. You can outpower me, you can outwrestle me, but you can't outthink me. Remember, in our three meetings at pay-per-view, I've defeated you in two of those matches and if it comes down to beating you in this multi-person match and taking away your opportunity to compete in your first-ever Ironmaiden match, well, then I guess that's just what I'm going to do.
Make no mistake Emma and Avery, I'm walking into this fatal four-way the same way I'm walking out, and that's with my head held high and living to fight another night. Everything I've fought for in over two years is on the line.
Four Diamonds enter, only one leaves with an opportunity of a lifetime.
One night. One match. One decision.
That’s all it takes for me to save my career in IWF.
And that’s one of the many reasons why I will not be denied.

24 de febrero de 2016
According to the Mother Goose poem "Monday's Child," babies born on Wednesday are "full of woe." I looked up "woe" in Webster's dictionary, and it means "deep suffering from misfortune, affliction, or grief." All the other days of the week have positive futures except for one – Wednesday. Funny that.
I was born on a Wednesday, unfortunately..
Meeting witth my attorney later that evening, I had no way of knowing just how unfortunate I would become.
Idle chatter at Gracias Madre, a Mexican restaurant on the major thoroughfare Mission Street. Mercedes shows a mixture of regret and confusion as she studies the contract on the table. She sits down in the chair across from Bonnie J. Reinhart, Esquire.
______________________________________
.::MERCEDES::..
I called you earlier, but you didn't answer. Where were you?
.::BONNIE::..
I was in another room when you called. I didn't hear the phone ringing until it was too late.
.::MERCEDES::..
What were you working on?
.::BONNIE::..
I was photocopying a report that I needed to send to a client. What were you doing when you telephoned?
.::MERCEDES::..
I had a nice little visit to Chicago to pick this document. You look a little tired.
.::BONNIE::..
Well, that's because at 9 I had a meeting with Ms Anderson and I met the representatives from Driver's in the morning. In the afternoon, I did some research on a few cases. After that, I worked on the report and was just finishing when you telephoned.
.::MERCEDES::..
Sounds like a boring day!
.::BONNIE::..
Yes, I don't really like doing research. But it needs to be done.
.::MERCEDES::..
She can't do this to me. “Take over my contract”? What the hell does that mean?
.::BONNIE::..
You don't know what that means?
.::MERCEDES::..
I'm fluent in five languages. Legalese isn't one of them. Bonnie, you know law like the back of your hand. What is she talking about?
[Bonnie reaches for her glasses and slowly pulls them off, taking great care to hang them from her blouse.]
.::BONNIE::..
Well... okay. You know when you agree to do something?
.::MERCEDES::..
Like watching Dancing with the Stars?
.::BONNIE::..
Things that your told you have to do, like your job.
.::MERCEDES::..
But, Bonnie, I may not have one for very long.
[As Bonnie attempts to explain again, Mercedes samples her enchiladas with guacamole entree.]
.::BONNIE::..
Yes, but...OK, how much do you love your Porsche?
.::MERCEDES::..
More than life itself.
.::BONNIE::..
Would you let just anyone drive it?
.::MERCEDES::..
What? No, that's crazy.
.::BONNIE::..
Well, your contract is like your car. If you gave up your contract, you're basically saying do whatever you want with my career until my contract expires.
.::MERCEDES::..
So, I wouldn't be able to wrestle?
.::BONNIE::..
Nope.
.::MERCEDES::..
Talk on IWF programming?
.::BONNIE::..
Nada.
.::MERCEDES::..
Not even hang around in catering?
.::BONNIE::..
I'm not even sure if you'll be even allowed in the building. Basically, you're giving away your rights to control every aspect of your career if you decide to stay. Your appearances would be severely limited to the point where you might wrestle once every three months if they see fit, and only with the expressed written consent of the company through Mrs. Conway.
.::MERCEDES::..
I get it! That's really realistic, Bonnie. Except...
.::BONNIE::..
Yes?
.::MERCEDES::..
I can get my car back, right?
.::BONNIE::..
About the same as hitting the Powerball, I'm afraid. Do you know how long your contract is?
.::MERCEDES::..
I think it varies based on tenure. I've been there for over two years now.
.::BONNIE::..
I looked at public records. With the salary you're making, after taxes you're net income is about the salary of a high school teacher.
.::MERCEDES::..
Which means?
.::BONNIE::..
Which means your hands are pretty much tied, Mercy. Either you hand over your keys to your car or show up on their Monday television program, swallow your pride, and announce your resignation in front of millions of fans in attendance and the thousands watching at home.
.::MERCEDES::..
I've got a third choice. Winning on Sunday.
.::BONNIE::..
Then I guess you know what to do.

The Mamas and the Papas wrote about Monday, Monday. I had Wednesday, Wednesday.
Over the years, the memories fade in and out. There was the time I got stopped for a traffic ticket and then watched helplessly as my first car get towed from Tom's Restaurant, the time my New York apartment was broken into – by a twelve year old Girl Scout, the time I rode the Parachute Jump ride at Coney Island because my brother made me, the time where my apartment air conditioner broke during the summer, the time Carmen kicked out the camera crew out of her house in the middle of my documentary. Are you sensing a theme here yet? My life certainly lived up to being a Wednesday's Child.
I guess we can add the day I left IWF headquarters with the contract in what could possibly be my last match.
Life of woe is right!
_______≈₪≈______
..::EPILOGUE::..
Well this is it. Do or die, sink or swim. Eat or be eaten.
Adapt or perish.
Survival of the fittest.
And yet I knew it would come down to this moment.
Look at me, talking like I've got one foot out the door.
I put my right foot in, I put my right foot out, I put my right foot in and shake it all about. I do the hokey pokey and turn myself around that's what it's all about.
No, no, no. It's all about "Want, take, have." Alexis was right about that much
Behind one door, an opportunity to be in the Ironmaiden for the third year in a row. Behind another: a Shieldmaiden championship match and behind the last door might be the biggest opportunity of them all: a Diamonds Championship match with the added perk of choosing the stipulation. Sounds like quite the payday. But none of those things happen unless I win out. Not being pinned just won't do. I HAVE to walk out of Danger Zone with my hand raised...or Danger Zone will end up being my last match in an IWF ring, and Monday Night Sacrifice my last time in IWF, full stop.
The competition won't make it easy. Apparently, one of them will try her level best to make that a reality. Now, it's no secret that I can rile up the division, but if I can get a reaction out of Kayla, one of my opponents on Sunday, anyone is fair game. Because when it comes to being hated, my superiors and my betters are amateurs compared to me.
You can go ahead and talk about the many times you've beat me and hang those victories over my head because while you may have beat me over and over, you haven't broken me, Kayla. When I said that I will not be silent, that no one will shut me up this year, I didn't discriminate against you. You're no special snowflake and you should know well enough to know that no matter what you do or say that you will never shut me up. Your sister couldn't do it, your ex-girlfriend couldn't do it, her aunt couldn't do it.
Nobody can, nobody has, and nobody will.
For over a month now, Kat Conway has made it her personal mission to piss me off. And when I'm pissed off, that's not a good sign for anybody, let alone you, Avery or Emma. She has taken everything away from me, but she gave me an opportunity. And I'm not going to waste it on the likes of you.
So, on February 28, in Omaha, bring all the badassery that you have, make sure that new ink is nice, but more importantly, be prepared to be disappointed again, because unfortunately for you, Kayla Richards, your Danger Zone debut will end the exact same way it did at Sacrifice – as a loser. The Anti-Christ of the Diamonds is about to be exposed again.
Danger Zone? I've been through hell already, Kayla. So give it your best shot. Not only will I survive, but I will win.
It's the final act, and you're just in time. Grab a seat, watch me pick up the pieces and come back fiercer, hungrier and stronger than ever before.

[REC•]
"So, this is it. The end of the road. The last goodbye. The final curtain..."
[The camera tilts upward, revealing Mercedes Vargas looking straight into the camera. We find the Argentine outside of her gated apartment in Los Angeles.]
"Imperial Wrestling Federation returns to pay-per-view. The very last show of this month will see yours truly compete at Danger Zone for the third year in a row. I guess that counts for something. It's all about the small victories, right?”
[Mercedes brushes away a few strands of her hair from her eyes.]
“My in-ring debut happened at a pay-per-view. It's hard to believe that Sunday might also be my last, and not by my choice. Kathleen Conway, your Head of the Diamonds Division - and while that's what she is, she certainly not an authority figure in my eyes - has added a little twist to the fatal four-way, and everyone in this match has something worth fighting for.
“Some more than others.”
[Mercedes takes in a deep breath.]
“I know what I'm fighting for, but what about my opponents? A title match and a spot in the Ironmaiden? You know, I'm starting to think that maybe this match isn't really all it's cracked up to be. I mean, anyone can get a title match if they get a win streak going and bodies will have to be found to fill those pods for the Ironmaiden. I've been in the first-ever Iron Maiden and the first two Iron Maiden matches, and title shots are few and far between. So tell me, who is getting the short end of the straw here? Yeah, it's me, again.
“And if Iose this time? Well, I can either announce my resignation on the first Sacrifice after the pay-per-view, or let Kat Conway do what she wants with my contract.
“It's all part of the 'Freedom of Choice Fatal Four Way.' Kinda rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?”
[Her smile fades, her expression menacing.]
“How long did it take you to come up with that gem, huh, Kat? See, I know I'm not going to have an easy time of it in my match. Every girl on the roster will be watching and waiting to see the end of my demise. I know Emma and Kayla are salivating at the chance to see who will finally put the nail in the coffin and I wouldn't even put it pass the new girl to fight for the honor, if it comes to that. And while it's a little creepy to have three people fight over you, I have to admit, I'm a little surprised.
“But you want to know why all those girls will be coming after me? It's not because this match is supposed to be everyone for themselves, and it will as the match goes on, of course. No, it's because that's what they're going to do, that's what they're programmed to do. Because just like you hired the rogues gallery of hitwomen to take me out, from Alexis and Jessica to Shea and Kayla and Eternity and Eliza, we both know that the only way you'll see me leave Imperial is in your fantasy. But that won't even happen in reality. Because for Kayla, Emma and Avery, Sunday will be the closest they'll ever get of seeing me leave this company.
“Not one of them, not a DAMN one of them will pull it off. When I go out into that ring Sunday night, when I give it my all, when I lay it out on the line, there is no one that's going to stop me. Come Danger Zone, I hope Kayla, Emma and Avery know what they've got themselves into.
“And I hope you know that you made a big mistake you're going to regret. Because when you fuck with my career, you're asking for trouble. And there's going to be a hell lot of trouble coming in Omaha. It will be swift. It will be silent. It will be deadly. And whatever happens in that ring to my opponents will be on your hands.”
[Was this arrogance on the part of Mercedes? Hardly. But it was understandable that few would mistake that for confidence. Nonetheless, it never stopped her before, and it damn sure wasn't going to happen at the pay-per-view.]
“You've had your fun, Kat. I showed up for your three-ring circus, jumped through your hoops, endured through your humiliation and degradation, competed valiantly against your handpicked opponents, and although I lost every one of your silly little challenges, here I am. Still here, still standing and, yes, still talking. And I'll let you off with this, and I mean every word.”
[Mercedes goes quiet for a moment as she lowers her head. She lets out a sigh before raising her head again.]
“You may be the 'Queen of Diamonds', but you damn sure aren't the queen of me. So put this in your royal proclamation, bitch: At Danger Zone, I hope you're prepared to weep for the three opponents you put in my way, because Mike Laszlo won't be the only one having a tombstone in his name.”
[Fade]
