Sacrifice is over and Rob Diamond is the new IWF InVictus Champion, though that wasn’t his plan for the evening. His plan was to step into the ring with two of his best friends and another guy who seems pretty GREAT and put on an epic Tornado Tag Match, which he feels they did but then at the end of the match, after pinning Jayson Matthews, the referee did something unexpected, he handed Rob the InCictus Championship…
Seemed like some sort of a ploy, a way for Roberto to put an even bigger target on his back, a way to get his friends to see him as some sort of double crossing dirt bag and that has really gotten Rob pissed off. Problem is, as pissed off as Rob is, his friends are even madder.
Rob: Warren! Wait!
We catch Rob backstage after the show, he’s chasing after his friend, partner and brother, Warren Kane who is storming his way back to the locker room they both share, Rob is dragging the Invictus Championship along with him and Warren isn’t slowing down.
Rob: Come on man, you can’t think I did that on purpose!
Warren comes to a dead stop, taking a visibly deep breath before spinning around on his heels to face Rob, his face bright red but he’s trying hard to restrain that Kane Rage.
Warren: I don’t know what to think Rob! Last week you were talking about fighting Verona for all the right reasons, really making yourself out to be the superhero everyone wants you to be and then this week?
Warren shakes his head trying to straighten his thoughts out.
Warren: This week you pull some crap out there and walk out with Jayson’s title!?
Rob: That wasn’t the plan! You saw the ref same as me, after the pin fall someone radioed his little ear piece-
Warren: What I saw was you take the belt.
Rob sighs and looks down at his feet.
Rob: What did you want me to do?
Warren: Give it back.
Rob: You know Verona won’t let that happen.
Warren: Honestly? I don’t know what I know.
Warren turns his back on Rob now and walks into their shared locker room, slamming the door hard behind him. Rob slumps against the white painted brick wall and just stays there for a moment until a voice catches his attention.
Amy: Hey.
Rob: Hey.
Amy slowly approaches him, leaning against the wall as well but her body pressed lightly against his, he rests his head on top of hers.
Amy: Everything ok?
Rob: Nope… Hopefully it will be…
Amy: You guys are family, I’m sure he’ll come around.
Rob: Yeah, I hope so.
Neither of them really know what else to say, Rob hates the way things are at the moment, not just between Warren and him but with IWF as a whole.
Amy: Can I ask you something?
Rob: Shoot.
Amy: When we met I was training to become a professional wrestler, I’ve been a little distracted this last month but I was hoping-
Rob: I’d complete your training?
She looks up into his brown eyes with a sly smile, catching the half a Star Wars quote immediately.
Amy: You’re such a nerd. Yeah, I’d like you to be my new master.
Rob’s eyebrows raise at the seductive use of the word “master”.
Rob: Never had a padawan before…
She moves in front of him, her hands lightly grazing over his bare chest with a grin.
Amy: Teach me in the ways of the force?
Her lips move toward his, puckered up and pursed when suddenly the sound of metal hitting concrete distracts him, the Invictus Championship lays on the ground and Rob stares at it with an odd look in his eyes.
Amy: What? What’s wrong?
He looks at her like he’s just seen a ghost.
Rob: I… I can’t feel my hand…
It’s been a rough week, hell a rough year really but Rob has pushed on, persevered and refuses to let Roberto Verona beat him. However another road block has been put before him, he cradles it now over his lap just staring into the silver plate of the Invictus Championship.
I know no one is going to believe me and that’s fine but I’m just gonna say this once so I can say I said it. I wasn’t trying to win this belt.
He sounds sincerer, regretful even which is surprising coming from a man who supposedly regrets nothing.
I didn’t step into that ring with any sort of ulterior motive, I just wanted to put on a good match with three of the best in the business today. So when I say this you know I’m being honest.
I’m sorry Jayson.
He looks up now into the lens of the camera, the shot panning out so show him sitting on a steel chair in a slightly darkened locker room at this weeks Sacrifice, hours before the show goes on the air.
I ain’t never apologized for anything I’ve done in this business. I didn’t apologized when I ended my own brother’s career, I didn’t apologized when I destroyed Kyle’s life, I didn’t apologize when Spike and I completely dominated IWF for the first year of it’s existence and probably drove a lot of good people to take their balls and go home.
But I’m apologizing for this.
See, I know what this belts means to you Jayson, I know how hard you worked for it. Ever since you got into professional wrestling you’ve been stuck in the shadow of Steve Awesome. That’s a big goddamn shadow to be stuck in, it had me in it’s grips for a long time and it took more than I thought I was capable of to get of it. But I got out of it, I won championships without him, made a name for myself without, I got into a hall of fame without him…
He looks down at the belt again before speaking.
This belt, for you, represents all of your hard work, all of your pain and suffering, everything you’ve had to overcome to break free of Steve Awesome and finally be your own man. This belt means more to you than it ever could for me, that’s why I feel like such an utter piece of shit for taking it from you…
He looks back up, the remorseful look in his eye replaced with something else, something a little more vicious.
That being said, I’m not just going to hand it back to you and I know you wouldn’t want me to. You made your intentions pretty goddamn clear this week, you’re not going to stop coming for me until you pry this championship out of my hands it wrap it back around your waist. Well…
He stands up, throwing the championship over his shoulder as he does so.
I’m right fucking here, Jayson, come and get me.
A harsh smirk forms on his face.
Come show me first hand what this belt means to you, show me how far you’re willing to go, show me just how bad you wanna be a champion again. Don’t threaten me with backyard or bathroom attacks, step into the ring with me tonight, tomorrow or next week, step into the ring with me right now and we’ll see exactly how fucking bad you want this championship back.
See, this belt may not have the same sentimental value for me that it has for you but that doesn’t mean I won’t give my fucking life to retain it, after all, being a champion feels pretty damn good.
So stop playing coy, stop trying to be funny, drop the stupid little one liners. Pick a time, pick a place and the two of us will square up like men. You think I took this belt on purpose, you think I wanna cast you back to the bottom of the ladder with everyone else? All right, then step the fuck up and do something about it. I ain’t hard to find, I ain’t hard to reach, you got my cell phone number, text me a date and I’ll be there with this championship ready to go to war to defend it.
He adjusts the belt while cracking his neck.
You ain’t had nothing to lose for a long time Jayson, hell, your whole career has been one long fight to just have something to be proud of. So don’t ask me what you’re willing to do to get this belt back, ask yourself what you’re willing to do? Ask yourself how far you’re willing to go to beat me? Ask yourself how much this belt really means to you because I’ve done a lot worse than pin a good friend for a hell of a lot less.
I like you, I respect you, I don’t wanna hurt you, hell I wish I didn’t have to but we all know the old sang.
Shit in one hand and wish in the other, let’s see which one fills up first.
If I gotta hurt you to keep this championship, I will, if I gotta do worse, well then I’ll just suck up all the good feelings I have for you and bury them down deep in the pit of my stomach until the job’s done. Truth is, I didn’t want this championship but now that I have it, I sure as hell don’t plan on losing it. What I have to do to keep it isn’t really a question for me at this point in my career.
I’ll do what I have to.
See, I know Verona’s plan is to try and turn my friends against me by making me look like a bad guy. Let’s pull a clever chess move and put the Invictus on Rob, that way he’ll be too busy fighting off anybody who takes advantage of the 24-7 rule while at the same time fighting to keep his friendships alive.
He snorts a laugh.
It’s a good plan save for one thing. I have faith in my friends. Faith that they will see right through Verona’s bullshit and know that I’m not the bad guy here. I spent a lot a years playing the part of the ultimate villain and while it helped get me to where I am it never left me feeling fulfilled. When I step out into that ring now, whether it’s against my best friend or my worst enemy and I hear those fans cheer my name I feel fulfilled.
I feel whole.
That’s why I say let’s drop the bullshit threats, let’s not pretend like we’re going to go to war with each other over the Invictus Championship. Save the breath Jayson because I know when it comes down to it, you don’t have the balls to put me out of my misery and I sure as hell don’t wanna have to…
Thing is…
I will if you push things that far.
He takes the belt off his shoulder and holds it up for you to get a better look at it.
Ask yourself kid, you willing to kill for this?
You damn well better be.
And if you ain’t down with that then I’ve got two words for ya.
Suck it.
