14 years ago.
{ Two men in suits walk down a stark white hall way, one is shorter than the other and his suit isn't exactly in pristine condition, wrinkled and somewhat old looking, the other is tall and lean and his suit is a grey tweed. }
"She hasn't spoken in weeks."
"Yeah? Who could blame her, kid's been through a lot."
"That she has, are you sure you're ready to take on this responsibility?"
{ The two men stop in front of a large oak door, the taller man looking in to the brown beady eyes of the smaller man with receding hair line known as Jimmy. }
"Ready? Don't know if anyone is ready to be a parent, but the kid's dad was a good friend a mine, feel like it's the right thing ta do."
"You're a good man Mr. Snart."
{ Jimmy half shrugs his shoulders with a smirk. }
"Maybe, don't know just don't wanna see my buddies kid wind up in the system, you know?"
"Of course Mr. Snart, being with someone familiar should do her wonders."
{ The two of them shakes hands as the taller man moves out of the way of the door, allowing Jimmy to reach out and push it open. }
"Hey Laura."
{ On the other side of the door sat Laura, the small blond haired daughter of El Diablo, her hair pulled back into a single pony tail wearing the bleak drab clothing of a child being provided for by the state. She looks up at the smiling Jimmy with a slight glint of hatred in her eyes. }
"How ya doing sweetie?"
{ Jimmy walked up to where she was seated at a smaller child sized table, he drags another small seat up and sat down beside her, she never took her eyes off him. }
"Look kiddo, I'm sorry bout ya daddy but hey, I'm gonna be your daddy now."
{ He reaches out and places his hand on her thigh, she winces a little and moves away from him. }
"You... You killed him..."
{ Jimmy snickers under his breath, noticing that they are alone in the room now and leans very close to her, his hot breath sending shivers down her spine as it hit her neck. }
"Prove it."
{ He stood up snatching her by the wrist and forcing her to her feet. }
"Now come on ya little brat, I got places to be."
{ He forcibly drags her toward the door, she realizes quickly its pointless to fight and relents to to matching his pace. }
"First I'm gonna take ya to your new home and then you're gonna show me a little "appreciation" if ya catch my drift."
{ He looks down at her with an evil glint in his eyes as he pulls her out of the door and into the hallway... }
"Laura?"
She looks aimlessly out the window, her mind in another world and the sadness on her face extremely evident. I sometimes forget how completely heartless and devoid of humanity she is until she goes quiet and retreats into her own mind.
"Laura?"
I reach out for her, my hand touching the slightly moist skin of her shoulder but she quickly turns around and pushes my hand away.
"Don't touch me!"
She looks furious, angrier than I have ever seen her before. I tilt my head at her as she shakes her, sapping herself out of her day dream.
"I'm sorry... You... You startled me."
"It is fine. I- I am worried about you."
"Worried?"
[She scoffs at me, her ruby red lips pursed together into a sneer.
"Don't waste your time."
"Tell me, what is it that has been bothering you?"
She looks away from me, trying to hide the shame and regret in her eyes but I can still see her reflection in the hotel room window.
"It's nothing..."
"You do not have to lie to me."
"It's just... I've been thinking a lot about my father lately and..."
"And what?"
She turns to face me again, her hands pressed hard against my chest as she pushes me backward onto the bed, her face a devious smile as she removes her tank top.
"And how badly I want you to just shut up and take off your clothes."
She crawls over the top of me, her lips pressing against my stomach, then my chest, making their way up to my neck before she grabs me by the shoulders and pushes me down harder onto the bed...
"Destiny."
The two of us stand before the banner for Destiny, Laura with her blond hair pulled tightly into a bun, a red three piece skirt suit pulled tight around her vivacious frame, she smiles as she pulls her thoughts together.
"Some men, like my client, are destined for greatness. From the moment they are born there is a clock counting down to the moment that they go from being ordinary to simply extraordinary. Their whole lives are built around one single moment in time when they change the whole world around them, it is their Destiny to ascend to a higher level of being."
"While others..."
"Men like Ryan Shane, they are destined to forever live their lives in the shadows of truly great men. Destined to come up short at every single twist and turn until finally their clock runs out and they die, forgotten, unloved and completely unnoticed by the world with which they lived in."
She clicks her tongue as she looks seductively at me and the Man of Steel Championship on my shoulder.
"My client has a Destiny, a future, he IS the future of professional wrestling, of Imperial Wrestling, he is the man men like you will one day hope to be, strive to be but you will never attain the level of greatness that he will. That isn't your destiny, that isn't how you fit into this world. Your only reason for existing is to prop up men like my client, men who will change this world, you simply exist as little more than canon fodder."
"The hunted to my hunter."
"I know you fancy yourself as some kind of technically genius inside that ring Ryan but let's be honest with each other. Even in that back water indy promotion pieces of crap like you and Jake Keeton come from you were little more than than a stepping stone for truly great wrestlers who would go on to help revolutionize the industry once they were noticed by Imperial Wrestling."
She smiles deeply, content with her verbal barrage against another one of the wrestling worlds indy darlings.
"It's not your fault Ryan, it takes a man of greater will than yourself to change destiny. Once my client was destined to conquer the hallowed halls of high schools and lysiums until I swooped in and saved him from that. I raised him up onto a pedestal, showed him a side of himself he never knew existed and together we have conquered Imperial Wrestling. Together we have beaten some of the best there has ever been and together we hold a prize you have fooled yourself into thinking you deserve."
"It's a shame really, Ryan, in another life, another promotion, you could easily be a top competitor. It's unfortunate that you stepped out of whatever tiny little pond you were working for and back into the deep blue ocean that is Imperial Wrestling, a company where you have only ever been the butt of a joke."
"Did you think things had changed?"
"Did you think it was going to be easier this time?"
"The only difference between your last stint here and now is the level of competition. It's gotten better, it's ascended past you, Imperial Wrestling has reached a wholly new level in professional wrestling that has never been witness before. The only thing you can hope to do inside of that ring Sunday Night at Destiny is witness the Future as it passes you by."
I look at the championship on my shoulder, absorbing everything Laura has just said before looking back at the camera.
"Mr. Shane, you think I have been avoiding you because I am less of a man than yourself? I am sorry to disappoint you Mr. Shane but the reason I did not immediately accept your challenge is because I was trying to save you..."
"From yourself."
"I have watched you as you re-climbed the ranks here in Imperial Wrestling, slowly working your way up toward a championship of one kind or another and the one thing I have noticed in every match..."
"You do not want it anymore."
I look again to the championship on my shoulder, memories of the truly awful things I had to do to attain it, to retain it, all things I would do again without flinching.
"What this business is, what it can do to you, you do not want that anymore, you do not want to be a part of it. You stood in the ring and watched as son tried to strike down his father. You have stood in the ring before and witnessed equally heart breaking moments. Your entire career has been one of being unwilling to do what needs to be done. And now you enter a cage with me, a place I did not want to put you and you will try to take something I have sacrificed for."
"Something I would kill for."
"Do you have even the vaguest idea of how far I am willing to go to keep this championship? The things I am willing to do to you? Mr. Shane, you have made a grave mistake pursuing this match with me because when you step into the cage you will be entering a hell you have never known before. If you think watching Mr. Keeton's boy jam a dagger deep into his heart was difficult to witness then just imagine the crowd who will be present for your very literally crucifixion inside of that cage with me?"
I look to the banner, to Destiny before turning back.
"My destiny is to be the Future Face of Professional Wrestling, a Killer of Legends and your Destiny is to be a foot note in the annuls of my historic Man of Steel reign."
"Sunday Night, Mr. Shane, you will fear the future."
Laura steps forward again.
"Ryan, I'd like to be the first to cordially invite you to your own funeral. Can't wait to see you there."
Laura laughs to herself as she signals for the cameraman to send us to black before the most brutal beating in the history of this company. And I am greatly looking forward to it.
