“If fear is cultivated it will become stronger, if faith is cultivated it will achieve mastery.”
― John Paul Jones
I'm not sure what I'm doing here.
My life, over the last few months since Redemption Wrestling closed its doors for good, has been good. I went from having a few hundred dollars and a '87 Toyota Tercel station wagon to my name to finding the love of my life and settling down in St. Louis, Missouri. I had walked away from the only job I'd known for the past 7 years, and did it with a smile on my face. And yet, I find myself staring at the contract I requested to join the ranks of the Imperial Wrestling Federation.
Why?
Because sometimes, you can take the man away from the sport, but you can't take the sport away from the man.

Lily Ravensdale: Tell me again why you're doing this?
Chris King: Because I was never destined to run an insurance office in St. Louis.
Lily Ravensdale: But you have a steady job, with benefits, and you're providing for this house.
Chris King: Yeah, but it's not what I want to do.
Lily sat down next to me at the dining table, watching for a moment as I found myself staring out the window at the horizon. She put her hand on my shoulder, drawing my attention to her.
Lily Ravensdale: You know I'll support you in whatever you choose to do. This is how we met, after all. I still remember--
I couldn't help but smile. I remembered, too.
Chris King: The first time I laid eyes on you, I was so goofy. I tried to remain calm, but--
Lily Ravensdale: You tried like hell to impress me. But it wasn't gonna work on me, and I think you knew it.
Chris King: It was that British accent that won me over.
She gave me that sideways smirk that always sent my heart over the edge.
Lily Ravensdale: That, and this incredible body you couldn't take your eyes off.
Chris King: But you insisted on keeping things professional!
Lily Ravensdale: Are you kidding? You and I couldn't start anything while Redemption was still open. Think about how many inter-office hookups we saw. I didn't want to be one of those... those...
Sometimes, I forgot she wasn't born here. She struggled from time to time with the slang.
Chris King: Ring rats, dear... the phrase you want is "ring rats".
Lily Ravensdale: That's the one. But that's not why you're staring out the window on a Thursday morning. So why don't you tell me what's really going on?
Gotta love her. Boiled right down to it in a matter of seconds.
Chris King: I'm afraid.
Lily Ravensdale: You? Afraid? Since when?
Chris King: You don't understand. This is a new venture entirely. Nobody to help me get ahead here, and nobody's going to give a damn about what happened in the past.
Lily Ravensdale: Nobody gave a damn about what you did before Redemption, and you know it. You just gotta have faith.
Chris King: Faith?
I was getting The Look. I knew I was about to get a lesson. So I did what I always did when she started talking; I listened.
Lily Ravensdale: If you believe in yourself, you know that you can accomplish anything. Nobody is EVER more prepared than you--one of your defining characteristics. Use it to your advantage. Learn everything you can about your competitors. The rest is just fighting, and you do that well enough. Just be you. The fans will love you, and the rest will hate you for how fast you move up that ladder.
She makes it sound so simple, doesn't she?
Chris King: I like it. Keep going.
She understands what I mean.
Lily Ravensdale: You are the Kingslayer. You are one of the most dangerous people on the roster, and you haven't even signed the paperwork yet. Because you know that the voice that speaks the loudest is the whisper in the storm.
I love it when she gets philosophical.

So I'm in.
See you soon.
