“SHATTERED MIRROR - PART I”
Act I - The Prelude
25 January 2017 -- 10:45 AM
Calm, cool, and collected.
Never wavering--not even for a moment.
On the surface, it would seem that all was well the minute Fiona McFly stepped inside the smallish white room and locked the steel door behind her. Yet on this sunny and chilly Wednesday morning in Arlington, we see that something has been troubling her soul, bewitching her mind for the past several months. Sure, the place was nothing more than a tornado bunker--newly built in time for the upcoming severe weather season that typically strikes North Texas when the seasons change from winter to spring. But for the Northern Irishwoman, it was more than just a place of shelter and safety.
Much, much more than that.
She wanted to be someplace that was free of distractions from the outside world above.
Even though Fiona didn't consider herself to be a "devout" religious follower by any stretch--despite her family's background in relation to the topic--she still believed that, somehow, someway, a higher power was calling her to this point in time, guiding her through teachings designed to instruct her on the notion that there was, indeed, more to living than simply punching or kicking someone for sport's sake.
She sought that guidance through the Holy Scriptures.
With nothing else save for a small swivel chair, some LED lighting, and a desk with large mirror, this little cabin of safety and security was--in Fiona's eyes--a place for deep meditation, a steady dose of mental exercise that that's meant to exercise the mind and, perhaps, help her along the path to enjoying a fruitful and prosperous life, no matter what line of work she has chosen to undertake.
Taking her copy of the Bible out of her small handbag, she opened up to a bookmarked place in the text, studying a passage that dealt with her own sense of self-doubt when it came to her craft.
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control."
-2 Timothy 1:7
Quietly, she she took out her modern-day quill pen and wrote down the verse on a small notepad, word for word, before turning the pages of the Scriptures. She eventually came up to another set of verses, these dealing with her unresolved anger over the revelation that her own mother, Katherine McFly, had lied to her about her true biological father for years, and about how she ordered the attack on her own husband William, the man who raised Fiona as if he was her dad.
"Let all bitterness, wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other just as God in Christ has forgiven you."
-Ephesians 4:31-32
-Ephesians 4:31-32
Breathing slowly, she wrote the second set of verses on her pad before flipping over to a third passage. This one dealt with the sadness that had crept into her mind, about not having been able to see William for years following the pub incident, and the pain she felt upon knowing that he had neglected his duties as an officer by not having the courage to stand up to her cheating mother.
"The steadfast of mind. You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.'"
-Isaiah 26:3
-Isaiah 26:3
Fiona placed her copy of the Scriptures back into her bag and turned around, facing the desk and mirror. She placed both items on the steel surface before peering her eyes down on her notes. She turned up, staring at what was--on the exterior--supposed to be her own reflection.
But...it wasn't.
It was as if her subconscious had begun to play tricks.
