Below is a list of our currently sanctioned match types, more may be added as they occur and the federation grows. Matches unique or special to IWF are highlighted in yellow.
Singles
A singles match is a match between two wrestlers. The first person to either win by pinfall or submission is the winner. If one of the wrestlers get disqualified, or "counted out", they will lose the match. In IWF, unless otherwise stated, both competitors traditionally have to adhere to a ten count to avoid a loss via count out.
Special Guest Referee
A match usually contested under standard rules, but with an outside party as the match official. Special Guest Enforcer is a variation of this match where an outside third party is assigned to ensure no interference.
Submission
A match contested under standard rules but can only be won via submission.
No Holds Barred
A match contested under stand rules, where illegal holds and otherwise banned manoeuvres such as low blows and choke outs are allowed, however blatent weapon usage can still result in a disqualification if caught by the referee.
Chain
Both competitors are chained together by the wrist. A No Disqualification, No Count Out, No Holds Barred Contest that can only be won by pinfall or submission.
Assault X
A bright red "X" is suspended above the ring, which must be retrieved without the use of a ladder. To aid the competitors in this goal there is a steel scaffold of platforms linking the corners of the ring in an "X" which must be climbed. The red "X" can also be substituted for another prize, typically a Championship or a briefcase.
Blindfold
A match contested under standard rules where one or both competitors must wear a blindfold for the duration of the match.
One Armed Bandit
A match contested under standard rules where one or both competitors are forced to compete with one arm tied behind his or her back.
"I Quit"
A No Disqualification, No Count Out, No Holds Barred contest that can only be won when one competitor forces an opponent to say the words, "I Quit".
Falls Count Anywhere
A No Disqualification, No Count Out, No Holds Barred Contest where pinfalls and submissions are legal anywhere in the arena. Hardcore is a variation of this where the use of foreign objects is actively encouraged. A Submissions Count Anywhere Match is a variation where submissions are legal, but pinfalls are not.
Extreme Rules
A No Disqualification match where anything goes but the final decision must occur inside the ring, for this reason this match can end in a Count Out. The Invictus Rules variation of this match has No Count Outs.
Two Out Of Three Falls
A match contested under standard rules but has up to three falls. The first competitor to score two falls wins. A variation of this match is a Three Stages Of Hell match where each fall has a unique stipulation, often decided by the competitors beforehand. A House Rules Match is a gambling variation of this match where neither competitor knows the stipulations for any of the falls and these are decided at the beginning of each fall by the spin of a stipulation roulette wheel at ringside. Another variation of this match is a Two Out Of Three Submissions Match, where each fall can only be decided by submission.
Handicap
A Handicap match is a match where one competitor or a team compete against a team of competitors with a higher number (for example; two against one, three against two, etc.). Unless otherwise stated, all competitors are bound by traditional match rules.
Gauntlet
A variation of the traditional handicap match where successive opponents can only enter the match when and if the competitor or team with the numbers disadvantage has eliminated an opposing competitor or team. The match continues until one competitor or team eliminates all of their opposition. Elimination can occur via pinfall, submission or disqualification.
Iron Man/Woman
An Iron Man/Woman match is a match where there is a set time limit (usually 30, 45 or 60 minutes) and is also a multiple-fall match. The way to win the match is to have the most points by the end of the time limit. To gain a point, the competitor must pin or submit their opponent. A point can also be gained by countout or disqualification. Ultimate Submission is a technical based variation of this match were pinfalls do not gain points but submissions do.
Lumberjack
A Lumberjack match is a regular singles match between two male competitors where the outside of the ring is surrounded by wrestlers. The wrestlers that surround the ring are called lumberjacks. If a competitor is knocked out of the ring, the lumberjacks will put them back in. A Lumberjill Match is the female equivalent of this match.
Four Corner Strap
This is a match where both competitors are bound to each other by a length of leather strap by the wrists. Victory can only be achieved by a competitor dragging themselves over to each corner of the ring and touching each of the turnbuckles in succession and without interruption or resistance from an opponent. If interrupted before completion, the competitor must start again.
Tag Team
A Tag Team match is traditionally a match between four wrestlers divided into two equal teams. One competitor of each team stands just outside the ring ropes until he is tagged in by his partner. This match is won by pinfall or submission. Tornado Tag is a variation of this match that does not require any competitor to tag in and all teams share the ring at the same time. Variations of this match can feature six, eight or a maximum of ten competitors, but only one person of each team is considered legal unless it is specifically fought under tornado tag rules.
Triple Threat
A regular match but with three competitors. First competitor to score a pinfall or submission wins.
Fatal Four Way
A regular match but with four competitors. First person to score a pinfall or submission wins. A variation of this match is a Four Corners Match, where two of the four competitors start, and two wait in opposite corners of the ring. Any competitor can then be tagged in and out of this match. First person to score a pinfall or submission wins.
Fatal Five Way
A regular match but with five competitors. First person to score a pinfall or submission wins.
Battle Royale
This elimination match includes a minimum of four competitors. Eliminations occur by competitors throwing opponents over the top rope. This continues until a single competitor remains in the ring and is thus declared the winner.
The Roulette
A grand variation of a traditional Battle Royale is the Roulette Match where two competitors start and another one enters the match every two minutes until all the designated competitors have been accounted for (typically between 20-30 men). The Roulette Match is the signature attraction at the annual IWF Pay-Per-View, High Stakes and the winner is guaranteed an Imperial Championship title shot at Night of the Immortals.
(X)-Pack Challenge
This is a regular match consisting of between a minimum of six and a maximum of eight competitors, as determined by the value of (X). First person to score a pinfall or submission wins.
Championship Scramble
A variation of the (X)-Pack Challenge, a Championship Scramble Match is a multiple person Championship contest which continues until a specified time limit is reached. All decisions within this time limit are acknowledged by the official, but the ultimate winner is the person who scored the final decision before the time limit expired. This person is also declared the Champion.
Elimination
A regular match with a minimum of three competitors. The competitors are systematically eliminated one by one by pinfall or submission until there is a sole survivor in the ring and is thus declared the winner. This match can be also be contested under tag team rules.
Extinction Event
The Extinction Event match is a grand variation of an elimination match match fought by two equal teams - Champions vs Challengers that continues until one team has been completely eliminated. Championships change hands dependant on which challenger eliminates which champion. This match is contested annually at the Survival of the Fittest Pay Per View event. Sometimes it is decided in a Winner Take All format where the surviving team captures all the gold regardless of individual eliminations.
Prison Break
A variation of a four way elimination match where all four competitors start the match chained to a ring post. A competitor is then selected at random to be released, and is given the choice of opponent. From here the match follows elimination rules where the survivor of each successive fall picks his or her next opponent. The match continues until there is a sole survivor.
Submission Elimination Xtreme (SEX)
A Submission Elimination Xtreme (SEX) match is a variation of the elimination match that can only be won by submission. There are No Count Outs, No Disqualifications and No Holds Barred. The match continues until there is a sole survivor. This match was innovated by Kathleen Conway.
Steel Cage
A No Disqualification, No Holds Barred match where competitors are locked inside a steel cage that surrounds the ring. Unless otherwise stated, steel cage matches in IWF typically can only be won when a competitor or a team escapes over the top of the cage. There are different variations of this match in IWF, including a Death Cage and a Prison Yard Match, each of which have their own uniquely stipulated rules, often defined by the competitors prior to the match taking place.
Cell
A No Disqualification, No Holds Barred match where competitors are locked inside a flat roofed steel cage, specifically designed to deter escape or interference from an outside party. Matches can only be won by pin fall or submission inside the ring. Just as for Steel Cage matches, there are different variations of this match in IWF, the rules often defined by the competitors involved prior to the match taking place.
Dragon's Den
Adopted by NCW and IWF as the signature attraction of the annual Metamorphosis PPVs across both companies, this match was originally conceived in 2001 by IWF and NCW Hall of Famer, Spike Kane. The match is considered to be the next evolution of a standard cell match, and is contested inside a sixteen foot high, sixteen ton steel chamber built around the ring. The chamber is connected directly to the ring on all sides by a steel platform, which itself is littered with weapons. The walls are wrapped in barb wire, from which various weapons are hung from the walls and dome ceiling. anything goes in this match, and it can only be won by pinfall or submission. A Diamond Dragon's Den was held at Metamorphosis 2017 which featured female competitors for the first time ever in the match's long and bloody history.
Man Of Steel Rules
A match contested inside a steel cage where victory can only be achieved by a competitor via submission or knockout (failure of the opponent to answer a ten count). Disqualification is possible unless otherwise stated. Each competitor only has a limited number of rope breaks at their disposal, typically two. The female equivalent of this match is a Maiden Of Steel Rules Match. A God(dess) of Steel Rules match variation was introduced by Spike Kane, and is contested inside a steel cell instead of a cage. In this match, submissions and their associated rope break allowances are wavered, and the match can only be won by knockout.
First Blood
A First Blood match is a No Disqualification, No Count Out, No Holds Barred contest. To win the match, a competitor must make their opponent bleed.
Last Man/Woman Standing
A Last Man/Woman Standing match is a match where a competitor has to hurt their opponent enough to where he or she cannot make it to his or her feet before the count of 10, the one who cannot meet the count loses. There are no pinfalls or submission, no disqualifications, no count outs and no holds barred. A variation of this match, as innovated by IWF Superstar, Jake "The Ace" Conway is a Natural Selection Match, where the traditional ten count is substituted for a count of 21. Another variation of this match is a Texas Death Match where the opponent must be pinned prior to the initiation of the 10 count. If the pinned opponent also fails to answer the 10 count, they lose the contest.
No Disqualification
A No Disqualification match is a match where the wrestlers cannot be disqualified and can use weapons and outside interference. Unlike a regular hardcore match, a decision must be made in the ring.
A (Possession) vs (Possession) Match
These contests are matches where both of the competitors put something on the line, usually their mask or hair, but also Championships or Careers. The loser of the match would then lose the thing that they put on the line.
Boiler Room Brawl
A Boiler Room Brawl is a match where two wrestlers locked inside a boiler room in the bowels of the arena. To win the match, the competitor must incapacitate their opponent long enough to escape the boiler room.
Street Fight
This is a match where two competitors fight outside the arena. The competitors are allowed to use anything around them as weapons. The wrestler must win by either pinfall or submission. A variation of this match is the Comic-Con Brawl where the two competitors fight at an ongoing comic convention.
Ladder
A Ladder match is a match where a prize is hung above the ring, usually a championship belt or a briefcase with a contract inside. To win you must climb a ladder and retrieve the prize. Weapons are legal in this match type. A signature six person variation of this match type is the Joker In The Pack Ladder Match, an attraction at the annual IWF Pay-Per-View, Night of the Immortals, or it’s female variant, The Queen’s Gambit Ladder Match, held annually at Diamonds Are Forever. Another variation is the Reverse Ladder Match where the prize must be retrieved from ring side and then suspended above the ring by one of the competitors.
Tables, Ladders, and Chairs
A popular variation of the traditional ladder match, a tables, ladders and chairs match (usually abbreviated to TLC) is a match where tables, ladders and steel chairs can be used as weapons. Victory is achieved by ascending the ladder to claim the prize suspended above the ring.
Tables
A Tables match is a match where a competitor must put their opponent through a table with an offensive move in order to win. The match can also be used in tag teams, under an elimination match and during a one "fall" rules match. There is also a Devil's Dinner Table Match variation where a competitor must put the opponent through a table that has first been set on fire.
The Iron Maiden
An Iron Maiden match is a female exclusive match which takes place at the annual "Viewer's Choice" Pay-Per-View and earns the winner a guaranteed Diamonds World Championship title shot at Night of the Immortals. It is contested inside a large, circular steel cage that surrounds the entire ring. The chamber contains four "Maidens" which contain four of the six competitors in the match. The other two start the match inside the ring. A "Maiden" opens every five minutes to let another competitor into the match. The first competitor to score a pinfall or submission inside the ring wins, meaning that it is theoretically possible for the match to end before all of the competitors have officially entered the match.
Inferno
An Inferno match is a type of match where the ring is completely surrounded by flames when both of the competitors have entered the ring. The way to win the match is for a competitor to set their opponent on fire.
Buried Alive
A Buried alive match is a match where there is a grave dug out of dirt found outside the ring. The way to win the match is for a competitor to throw their opponent into the grave and bury them in dirt. There are usually shovels, wheelbarrows or bulldozers to assist the burial in the arena.
Casket
This is a match where there is a casket at ringside. To win the match, the wrestler has to throw their opponent in the casket and close the lid.
Coffin
A variation of the casket match where a competitor must incapacitate the opponent long enough to throw them into the coffin and nail the lid shut.
Body Bag
A match where a competitor must incapacitate the opponent long enough to place them inside a body bag at ringside and close it.
Ambulance
A match where a competitor must incapacitate their opponent long enough to load them on to a stretcher and place them into the back of an ambulance at ringside. A variation of this match is a Last Ride Match where a competitor must incapacitate their opponent long enough to place them into the back of a hearse. A Clown Car Match is a circus themed variation of this match where an incapacitated opponent must be placed in the back of a circus van.

An Inferno match is a type of match where the ring is completely surrounded by flames when both of the competitors have entered the ring. The way to win the match is for a competitor to set their opponent on fire.
Buried Alive
A Buried alive match is a match where there is a grave dug out of dirt found outside the ring. The way to win the match is for a competitor to throw their opponent into the grave and bury them in dirt. There are usually shovels, wheelbarrows or bulldozers to assist the burial in the arena.
Casket
This is a match where there is a casket at ringside. To win the match, the wrestler has to throw their opponent in the casket and close the lid.
Coffin
A variation of the casket match where a competitor must incapacitate the opponent long enough to throw them into the coffin and nail the lid shut.
Body Bag
A match where a competitor must incapacitate the opponent long enough to place them inside a body bag at ringside and close it.
Ambulance
A match where a competitor must incapacitate their opponent long enough to load them on to a stretcher and place them into the back of an ambulance at ringside. A variation of this match is a Last Ride Match where a competitor must incapacitate their opponent long enough to place them into the back of a hearse. A Clown Car Match is a circus themed variation of this match where an incapacitated opponent must be placed in the back of a circus van.
