“Wow, are you guys seriously interrupting my concentration right now for this?” He laughs as he tuns a corner, no-scoping one of the counter-terrorists that had appeared out of nowhere. “Fine,” he concedes, “lets put CS:Go on the back burner for a second.” He taps at the keyboard, joining the spectators and switches the picture-in-picture so that his webcam footage takes center stage while the game footage is reduced.
“So,” he continues, sniffing and rubbing the back of his hand under his nose, “you guys were a little pissed that I did that late night …” he trails off, eyeing the chat on his second monitor, “alright,” he laughs, “I guess it was technically, ‘early morning’, but anyway,” he adds, shaking his head, “you guys were cheesed off that you missed out on the action.
So let’s have it.” He leans back, holds his hands towards the webcam and waiting for the running stream of questions. “Yeah,” he continues, eyeing the first few questions, “I’ve been able to watch a few of the videos and hear what some of the other guys have said. But,” he smirks, “if you watched the VOD of my stream from the other night, I already, kind-of, addressed them” he pauses, “kind-of … I guess.”
He leans back, scratching at his temple with a finger as he tries to remember just what he said on his late night stream.
“Yeah,” he laughs, “so it’s kind of a jumbled blur, but …” he pauses, shaking his head to clear the cobwebs, “there was something … something about, Fiona?”
Screwing up his face, he chuckles as he looks up at the webcam, “No, that was last week … I think.
Jesus,” he sighs, “so, roulette, eh?” Reaching back, he pulls his hair out of his face, tucking it up and under a toque that he had beside him. “Yeah, so everybody knows the quick and dirty of the thing; thirty of IWFs gents all vying for a shot at the Imperial champion in a couple months.
But the devil, as they say, is in the details.
Sure, there’s the whole Battle Royal thing – but how many times have we seen one of those? Hell, the Diamond in the Rough girls had their own little battle last week. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all; but that doesn’t mean for a second that this is match is going to be textbook in any way.
Look, I’m no mathematician, but when the suits say they’re gonna send thirty men to that ring and I look around this locker room and realize that,” he smirks, “I don’t think we’ve got thirty guys under contract. I mean, taking into account the cruiserweight invitational boys who stuck around like Buck, Devlin, and Malo – no, I’m not counting Fenell because he was already under contract before that,” he adds, seeing the uproar in the chat over the omission of the spotlight stealing brother.
“So, even with the cruiserweights, we’re going to have some surprises in there.”
The tiredness seems to fade from his face as he grins, taking on a far more devilish façade. “Chaos, folks, utter chaos. When you consider that some of the guys in this match are going to be tearing their hair out trying to train and prepare for every eventuality that they might encounter … but in the end, the biggest hurdle for them to contend with is the fact that we have no idea who is coming out to that ring, or when.
Thirty men, randomly entering the ring; and as much as it excites me – the unknown still gives me butterflies.
Everyone talks about guys like Spike, and how they need to be eliminated early – but nobody knows when Spike is gonna even show up. Shit,” he laughs, “Spike could pull number one, or he could pull number 30; so there’s no way to really ‘plan’ for anything outside of …
Survive.
But the roulette needs to be more than just ‘surviving’, every one of us in there wants to be the last one standing, to be the one to step into the ring at the Night of the Immortals come May.
Survival can only get you so far; at some point the prey has to become the predator, and this match,” he winks, “is going to see quite a few sheep become wolves.
I think,” he shrugs, “it’s time to cast off my wool and rejoin the pack. I’ve kept my head down long enough and it’s about time to remind the masses who I really am – what I’m actually capable of. I’ll be shoulder to shoulder with guys who have been in that main event scene here in IWF, showing that I can, not only hang with them, but that I’ve got the skills, drive, and God dammit the fire to rise above them.
It’s time to fight …
Time to win …
THAT is what I’ll do next!”
