It was the last day of ‘free time’ for Devlin, he’d worked himself up and down the country and in preparation for Spike He’d Gone from Chicago to Michigan to Canada in but a few short days, it made your head spin what you could do in a week with enough motivation.
But today? Chicago again and home with her , that's where the centre was.
Kate’s face cut into a bright smile as she hugged him and he hugged her back hands pulling him inside as she laughed.
“I thought you were preparing! And you have a key! Why are you knocking?! Ass!”
Kate punched his arm and Then blinked and managed a small smile.
“Someone’s been working out, let me guess, The thing with Spike?”
Devlin chuckled and rubbed his arm with a nod even as he smiled.
“I know how much you love surprises! So I surprised you with me, you know how it goes Kate. Some folks need to sit in a room music blaring.”
A pause and he shrugs.
“ I don’t know I felt like coming home, seeing you smile, hearing Alex. The whole nine.”
Kate tilted her head and moved inside with Devlin a look of concern hitting her face as she looked up at him, over him.
“Much as I’m not gonna argue Dev, you okay? This is little out of your usual ritual.”
Devlin smiles and kisses her gently with a chuckle.
“This isn’t the usual match, I’m fine Kate, I’m doing this before a montage and I need the sappy, emotional character development before I go train to Face Ivan Drago…Or some other analogy.”
Kate smirks a bit and ruffles Devlin’s hair with another arm punch.
“You’ll be fine Devlin, you don’t need my approval …or my help.. you know this, you got this. I know you do, just have a little faith Mr Raine. Remember what it is you’re doing this for.”
Devlin shook his head rubbing just above his eyebrow.
“You have a hell of a way of making it sound like I should just go for it..”
Kate chuckles and nods.
“Yup, but you were going to anyway Devlin, do what you need to do, see who you need to see ..and do me one favour yah?”
Devlin actually paused as he titled his head in curiosity and Kate did her best Adrian impersonation With a cheeky grin.
“Win”
And so he kisses her, gentle and brief because he places to go, people to train with.

And so a Day later we fade in on footage of Spike Kane’s career of all things. Devlin’s Voice starting to speak up in voice over.
“Spike Kane, Man, Myth, Legend, God Veteran of our business, warrior who has been there, done that only for a little while For Spike has been all highs, but scored by a singular low and what a hell of a low. Everyone has talked about it, had their say, used it against him, and right now a Man of Steel is a god, a Tyrant in charge of his own personal Regime, everyone who’s come close to standing in his way has been beaten, ground down. Laid low, and yet they come back for more, to be heroes against you…The saying goes that a Hero Is defined by his villains, and that very Villain sees himself the hero of his own story.”
A quick flash of darkness and a single word makes it self-known.
Power.
We find an Inage of Devlin in the corner during one of his matches staring down at a fallen opponent as that signature grin passes his face, another segment of his own promos, a mini –retrospective of his time so far.
“Let me lay this out straight Spike, I don’t trust the IWF board as far as I can touch their noses, I don’t like the stacking of the deck, I don’t like the fact AJ is sat on our shoulder any more than you, no matter how much of a boy scout the North Star says he is, I have to think that –maybe- just maybe he might screw you to make sure I win , or better yet screw me to make sure he starts a collection, so when I say to you Spike Kane I want this beating to be as honest as we can make it I sure as hell mean it.”
We slowly fade in to Devlin even as a second word pieces the Dark.
Wisdom.
The D:TV set is its usual brightness and Devlin brushes himself off with a chuckle and looks directly into camera.
“Hi there, nice to see you Spike, I’ve often been accused of not taking things seriously, but this? This I do, it’ s not even about the gold about your waist, I said to you That I’ve never killed a God before, and once upon a time I called myself a dragon slayer, I –specialise- in the impossible, the underdog work , but I’m not knight in shining glimmering armour, no sir I come from battered and rusted, crawling through fire and coals, to stare in the face of a man who wears the mantle of god .. and spit at him.”
Devlin grins, bounvin g just a little as he tuns on the spot.
“And to spit at him because he’s just a Titan, a legacy of the past, not wanting to let go of his mantle, yet aching all the same, desperate to find someone worthy, trusting that Fate, that Destiny will guide the way, let him know when it’s ok to let go, when it’s ok to stop. And to give him the fight he wants and that he deserves.”
Devlin claps his hand and points at the screen.
“I mean that’s why you’re doing this, Spike right? You say you’re holding onto that thing because it’s the only thing that matters right, the only thing that makes any sort of sense, no I think it’s something else, I think you want that Belt around your waist because it an excuse. You don’t say it out loud, but it’s in your eyes.”
Another final word makes it’s appearance.
Courage.
“You aren’t angry , no.."
That slight sad look.
"You’re empty. The fight fills you .. and really all you want is an escape, right? It’s not grief that drives you, or rather it is grief that drives you , you you throw yourself into each and every fight harder, harder and harder…Hoping the next one is the one that finishes you off, Hoping the next one ends the pain, ends the suffering ends the mindless boring hate that pulls you form one day to the next like a zombie waiting for the next meal and I know this…Because you aren’t a God..”
Devlin smirks softly and leans closer with a smile.
“Or if you are, you’re a god of the Greek or Norse persuasion, your motives, are very human, selfish.. and you like anyone else are scared of the inevitability, and Detroit me and you will meet, The IWF’s Past, the IWF’s legacy, no matter that anyone says Spike, nor matter what You have –defined- that belt even if I take it tomorrow, or the next day or AJ snatches it from you, the Name Kane is stained on it’s plates your –blood- runs in the steel, you skin form it’s leather, your seat form battle after battle …That I can’t take away from you.. “
Devlin sighs and shakes his head.
“But it’s time to let it go man, time for you to heal, and focus on bigger and brighter, time to focus on hope, time to focus on those who put their hopes in you and there are people there, everyone has made appoint of stopping you , I’m not going to stop you Kane, All I’m going to do is put you to sleep long enough for you to look at an empty hand.. and find a new Destiny to fulfil , an New path to tread…Because the one you’re walking’ on? It doesn’t end well..”
Devlin sighs and puts his hands together as if praying softly and closed his eyes and then slowly lifted his head to throw his hands down and look through the camera with that soft trademark smirk.
“But don’t worry Spike, all will be well, Just let Destiny take over, that’s all I’m asking…I promise it’ll be in good hands you can carry the rest of it with you to AJ to go all in, either way Come Detroit? Come the Motor city mayhem? We’re gonna do this and I promise you …I Grade A promise you That I will –not- back down.”
Devlin punches a hand over his heart and salutes.
“All Bloody Hail ,to the Reign of Raine.”
Fade out slowly to the D:TV Graphic, burning and being replaced into two simple words.
No Fate
