Jayson Matthews: Where is it!?
He says as he tosses around clothes and belongings from inside his suitcase.
Jayson Matthews: It has to be here!
I've been staying with my sister ever since that jerk Rob Diamond hit her in the head with a spinning backfist on Sacrifice. She suffered a mild concussion from the blow and you know, I just couldn't leave her until I knew she was going to be alright. She seems to be doing better now, she's at least up and running around. Plus you know, Coach Nighthawks career threatening injury. And I have no idea what's up with Warren and why he seems so flakey lately.
Man......
Things have been so crazy lately. I just figured I'd stay with my sister for awhile. I guess I just didn't want to deal with all this stuff on my own. But it was time to go back to school.
Mandi Matthews: How about you start by telling me what your missing?
Jayson didn't respond to her question, instead he chose to continue emptying out his suitcase of all it's contents onto the floor of the bedroom. Band t-shirts and boxer shorts were flying over head left and right until he finally found.......IT!
Jayson Matthews: YES!
There it was! On the bottom of the suit case was the object he was searching for. It was a small necklace with a small locket on the end. Jayson opens it up and takes another sigh of relief when he checks the picture inside. It was a picture of a man he never really got to know. Mandi knew exactly what it was he was holding and she scoffed at it and rolled her eyes as he took it and placed it around his neck and inside his t-shirt.
Mandi Matthews: You're still carrying that old picture of dad around?
Jayson Matthews: From the stories you told me about him, he sounds great.
Mandi Matthews: He was great. Everything was great when dad was around. He was nice and caring and generous and he worked extra hard for all of us. We were all an actual family when he was around. But he left us Jay.....when we needed him the most...he left and everything fell apart”
I could tell she was angry. She had every right to be you know? She was old enough to feel what it was like for him to “leave”. I was still to young to really understand what was going on. She thinks he's either dead or just doesnt want to be found. I guess I just hold out that he'd turn up one day with a REALLLLLLY good excuse.
“You would not believe the line at the grocery store, now lets play catch son.”
yeah, a guy can dream.
Gordon Matthews: Ah Jayson... I'd like to have a word with you alone when you have a minute.
That was Jayson's out from the tense moment he was having with his sister.
Jayson Matthews: Coming Gramps'....
Jayson heads for the door.
Mandi Matthews: Oh don't worry, I'll clean up this mess.
Jayson completely misses the sarcasm.
Jayson Matthews: thanks sis, love you...
~~~
Jayson Matthews: So what's this all about Grandpa?
Gordon slowly sits down in his easy chair. He was hesitant to speak but eventually he decided to say what was on his mind.
Gordon Matthews: Look I just wanted to say I was really sorry to see what happened to you last week, son.”
Jayson smiles and just waves it off.
Jayson Matthews: No shame in losing to a guy like Warren Kane. He's a really good wrestler and my friend.
Gordon Matthews: Well not only that, but also seeing your Coach take that nasty injury in his match with Ryan Shane. Plus what happened to your sister. That was hard for all of us.”
Jayson rubs his arm and sighs.
Jayson Matthews: Yeah it has been a crazy couple of weeks, now that you mention it. I guess the Jayson Matthews Victory and Gravy train just had the brakes hit, huh gramps? Heh.
He chuckles at his joke to try and lighten the mood but Gordon didn't seem to amused.
Gordon Matthews: It's just a shame that you built up a little momentum only to see everything around you fall down. Just like it usually does for you. Doesn't seem very fair if you ask me.
That was a weird thing to say. I mean yeah, I'm never usually on top for very long and it sometimes the good to bad trade off rarely seems balanced but it wasn't like him to just be blunt about it like that. But it doesn't matter, because I'm not going to let these past few weeks stop the train from getting back on the tracks. Oh yeah, were gearing for another run and this time were going to brake the last record I set.
A man of 1000 holds will get back up when ever he falls down until he can't get up any longer and trust me, i'm not even close to getting tired.
Jayson Matthews: Mandi is going to be okay. Technically Warren and I are tied one to one in wins so it's not all said and done in that department, and Coach Nighthawk's knee may be injured but his brain isn't, and all that knowledge he's been giving me is up there in his head. As far as I can see, things haven't fallen down that far, Grandpa. In fact I think I still got a little momentum left to run with, don't you?
Gordon half nods and half shakes his head as if he thought Jayson was right but that wasn't the point he was ultimately trying to make.
Gordon Matthews: Yes, but how long do you expect that to last?
Jayson considers the question for a few moments and then smiles and nods.
Jayson Matthews: You're right! How long will it last? I have to do something to make an impact while I have everyone's attention! Thanks Grandpa!
You hear Mandi's voice call from the other room.
Mandi Matthews: Jayson, your UBER is here.
Jayson Matthews: Well that;s my ride back to Chicago, thanks for the talk.
Gordon tries to stop him but Jayson was gone before he could say anything. Gordon just shakes his head, disappointed that Jayson left before he could tell him.
Gordon Matthews: If you only knew what's to come....
“Well last week didn't go so well.”
The scene captures Jayson Matthews as he shrugs off his loss to his best friend Warren Kane.
“The big bad winning streak has been broken, regretfully a lot sooner than my losing streak was but that's beside the point. But I guess if I had to lose to anyone then the best person I could think of would be to see Warren get his arm raised after being gone for so long. I brought the fight to him last week and there is no shame in losing if you gave it your all, and you know what, despite everything that had been going on, I'm proud to say I put everything I had that night into that match.
He shrugs his shoulders.
I hope Warren is happy about it. I also hope that Warren Kane figures out what it is he's looking for and I hope he finds it. I know he's trying to stop his dad. I know that there isn't too much that I can really do to help him aside from a good old tag team match, and I hope he knows that he can call me whenever he needs too. But I guess that begs the question though.....now what?
Now that the streak is over and the train has stopped, what do I do next?
He slowly raises up his hand that has his index finger pointed upward and he smiles at it in awe.
“That's right baby, we start right back and one to start having so more fun. I'm putting the cole in the fire, were generating some more steam and were coming to break five and get to six, were coming to make an impact now that people are looking my way and I think I gotta pretty good idea of how I'm going to do that. Oh yeah, keep your eyes glued to me because I'm going to try and take this old career of mine to the next level. But before I can do any of that, I gotta get through this Monday night. I gotta get through Sacrifice where I take on the Imperial Champion and his number one contender in a tag team match along side Bob Pooler.
He smiles and claps his hands in excitement.
“Hot damn that is exciting. First off Bob Pooler is going to be a great partner. He's already been a great invictus champion and he has a great twitch stream presence so I can only assume he's going to be great in this tag team match. But no matter how great Bob or I can be, taking on Andrew Jacobsen and Cable Arcane isn't going to be an easy feat. I mean just say those names again, Andrew Jacobsen and Cable Arcane. These guys are two of the best wrestlers in the world, so already you put me at a disadvantage heh heh but they've also been at each other throats, they are preparing to do battle at the biggest stage of them all and they are ready to go to war.
“I was there, I witnessed the moment that Nighthawk declared Andrew Jacobsen as a man of 1000 holds. It was a very cool moment for me to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a reason to put in all the hard work and the sacrifices that a guy like AJ has gone through. Eventually you make it through and then you can look back and smile and nod and say “i did it.” and you showed me that it is all possible for a guy like me.
I mean, really AJ you sort of paved the way for a guy like me. You really did. Back in the day when NCW was only showing guys like Steve Awesome and Adam Knite as there superstars a fresh faced new superstar emerged named Andrew Jacobsen. These other guys had the right catchphrase and the right style and everyone loved them but you Andrew, you showed the world that you didn't have to have all the glitz and glam to become a star. When you walk into a room people immediately respect guys like you because they know that you are the real deal. They know that you can walk the walk whenever you have to and I hope one day I get half the respect you have in this business.
And then there is Cable Arcane.
The big smile sort of fades away at the mention of that name.
“yup the guy that embarrassed me in front of the world. The guy that took my dreams and made them all into a joke when I stepped into the ring against him. The guy that punked me out and put me on the shelf for a couple weeks. Yeah, ever since that day Cable, I've been wanting to say something to you. I've been thinking about this moment for a long time and and now that I have the opportunity i'm finally going to tell you what's on my mind.....
Jayson glares into the camera for a few moments.
“Isn't sleep and rest like the same thing?
Jayson scratches his head and tries to determine the difference.
“I mean, I get he's saying no to them but honestly who rests AFTER they sleep?
Jayson smiles and extends his arms outward.
What? Did all that sleep tire you out Cable so now you have to take a nap?
He rolls his eyes and shakes his head.
“You know Cable, I don't think you'd be surprised to find out that I'm not your biggest fan in the world. As a matter of fact I think your kind of a douche. That's why it kills me to know that your impressive run as Imperial Champion, all the guys you beat, the title defenses, yeah you've done all that on your own without anybody's help and that's damn impressive. Sometimes I wonder what that match between us would have been like, had I at least gotten out of the starter gate. Sometimes I wonder, if I hadn't dropped the ball that night, maybe I'd be Imperial champion instead of you?
He runs his fingers through his hair.
“I got a little confession to make Cable.....all this wrestling factory stuff, all this getting trained by Nighthawk, all this getting better inside the ring stuff.....it's all mostly because of what happened that night. You beating me up so bad at Legacy last year, having all my momentum smashed like a bug, I never wanna feel that low again. So that's why I've been doing what I'm doing lately. Because one day Cable, maybe I'll get a shot at your title, maybe I'll get a one on one chance against you again and I promise you that when it happens, it will be NOTHING like the last time. I won't freeze up. I won't get scared. The next time I'll be ready.
Just like i'm ready for this week when I step into the ring along side Bob Pooler in a tag team main event. It's damage control this week guys. It's time to get that train a rolling again and we head to stop number one and beyond. Cable, Andrew.....I'm going bananas all over your face!
So it turns out, Coach Nighthawk doesn't exactly like my new plan.
Nighthawk sits in his office at the Wrestle Factory, his leg wrapped up and his crutches nearby. Jayson listens intently but you can tell he doesn't exactly like what he's hearing.
Nighthawk: Look Jayson, it's not that I don't think you could.....I just don't think that you are ready.
Nighthawk could tell that Jayson was disappointed so he tried to say it in a different way.
Nighthawk: There is just more training to be had before I think your ready to undergo such a feat.
Jayson Matthews: But coach, I-
But Nighthawk cuts him off. He wasn't trying to be rude or impolite about it, its just that Hawk had been training people for years, and he just had an eye for this sort of thing.
Nighthawk: Just trust me on this Jayson, I know your eager to move up the ladder, I know your excited about your successes and want to see more and it will all come, but it's just gonna come with time. Now lets go over your match with Warren last week.
Jayson Matthews: Yes Coach Nighthawk.
Coach knows what he's talking about with all this. I should probably listen to him about it.
OR....
I mean it's just his opinion you know? What are the chances he's wrong?
I think I'm going to do it anyway.
First chance I get.
I'll tell you about it later.
He says as he tosses around clothes and belongings from inside his suitcase.
Jayson Matthews: It has to be here!
