He watched the printer as it drew up the contract for his match for the Invictus Championship at A Night of the Immortals with wide excited eyes. He never had been in a person of authorities office for a good reason before, and now as he sat in Riley Gordon's office, he was amazed at how good it felt. How cool he felt to sit in her plush office chair as he awaited the contract for an opportunity of a lifetime. Riley smiles as she pulls the contract off the printer and placed it in front of Jayson.
Riley Gordon: Here it is, hot off the printer. Jayson Matthews verse Bob Pooler for the Invictus Championship at A Night of The Immortals.
She slides the paperwork across her desk and hands Jayson a pen.
Riley Gordon: Ready for you to sign.
Jayson Matthews: Wow....
Jayson holds the pen in his hand as he stares down at the contract in awe. He goes to sign his name on the dotted line but before he does he pulls his pen back and glances around the room.
Jayson Matthews: You sure this is real? Like, I'm not gonna sign my name on here and then everyone comes spilling out of some room laughing at me and telling me this is all a huge prank and they all point and laugh and call me a loser and a dweeb?
Riley shakes her head.
Riley Gordon: Um....no.
Jayson nods and then goes to sign his name again but pulls back one more time.
Jayson Matthews: I mean, this is cool with everyone? I didn't like cut in line or ruin your plans for somebody else or anything by answering Bob's open challenge and now you guys are just obligated to put me in the match just to save face?
Riley just looks at him and shakes her head. She couldn't help but smile and even chuckle at his innocence. It was almost kind of cute in a way.
Riley Gordon: No, Jayson listen, if we weren't cool with it we wouldn't have drawn up this contract. You've shown these past few months that you should be considered for an Invictus Championship match and last week when you pinned the Imperial Champion in the middle of the ring you pretty much sealed the deal for us. So no, this isn't a prank, and you haven't put any obligations on anyone else, this is your Invictus Championship contract that you EARNED.
Jayson smiled. It certainly felt good to be told how good your doing from a person in a higher position. By the way are we going to get recs?
Jayson Matthews: Thank you Miss Gordon.
Jayson holds the pen in his hand and he goes to sign his name. He puts the pen on the paper but before he makes a move he looks up at Riley once more.
Jayson Matthews: Yeah but your sure you-
Riley glares at him from behind her desk. I guess it wasn't as cute anymore.
Riley Gordon: Oh for the love of-WOULD YOU JUST SIGN THE DANG CONTRACT!?
Jayson jumps in his seat a bit and fumbles the pen around as he tries to grab it.
Jayson Matthews: Y-yes mam.
Jayson quickly does what he was told and signs his name on the dotted line.
Well it was official.
At least from my end.
In less than two weeks I would be stepping into the ring against Bob Pooler. The Invictus Championship will be on the line, and I'll be in front of a sold out arena crowd for A Night of the Immortals.
Not bad for the kid that nobody takes seriously.
I'm not sure what Gramps was talking about the other day, but from where I'm sitting things don't look too bad at all. In fact I dare say my luck is starting to change.
Jayson steps out of Riley's office and he doesn't get more than two steps down the hallway when he hears his cell phone go off. It was a text from Nighthawk. He knew it was a text from Nighthawk because the special ringer for Nighthawk goes off. The one that has Nighthawk saying “okay fine, for shizzle....HEY ARE YOU RECORD-”. Jayson looks at the text on the screen.
“We need to talk.”
Jayson sighed.
Of course..
...there's always something....
“OH YEAH BAY-BEEEEEEE!!!!!”
We open up to the smiling and energetic Jayson Matthews as he stands in front of the handi-cam this week.
“Ya boy is EXTRA excited this week....WOOOOOOO”
He yells as he does his best strut around the room.
“I'm extra excited because last week, in front of everybody, I went out to that ring and I restarted the Jayson Matthews victory and gravy train right back up again. Oh man it was awesome, everybody was like dude no...your streak is over and they were like oh no what a shame but you know what I scooped up the fumble and I righted the wrong and now I'm right back on track where I need to be. And I did it by pinning the Imperial Champion right in the middle of the ring. That's right....hashtag IPINNEDTHECHAMP!
He smiles from ear to ear.
“i can't stop smiling about that either. It's just so cool, I pinned the champ. It may not matter much in the grand scheme of things right now but I'll tell you what, that pin fall victory means more to me then any other one I've had so far. Sure that pin fall was a roll up pin much akin to the great Falcon of old, and sure Cable wasn't exactly paying attention and I may have caught him off guard just a tiny bit, but I still held his shoulders to the mat for a three count. And to most people they probably say it was luck and that it would never happen again but for me.....
He closes his eyes and takes a small sigh of relief.
“...for me it's redemption.”
He shrugs his shoulders.
“Well at least a little bit. Everyone defines me by the night I lost to Cable Arcane in crippling fashion. Well last week on Sacrifice I think that now I managed to put a modicum of doubt in the minds of everyone now. Now because I pinned Cable, now maybe a few more people might just wonder if I didn't freeze up that night, maybe the past year would have been a different story? Who knows, man? But I like “who knows?” better than “no way” I'll tell you that.
He nods his head.
“But I'll settle my deal with Cable Arcane some other time, but I'll use that momentum to ride right into an Invictus Championship match against Bob Pooler. All Bob has to do is sign his part of the contract and were up and running for one of the biggest matches of my life at Night of the Immortals. Definitely a great challenge. It was supposed to be Coach Nighthawk taking him on but we all saw what happened there. So I stepped up to challenge Bob and now he is my tag team partner for the second week in a row. Last week was huge Bob, we showed Cable and Andrew what a couple of Jason Todd's can do when they come together and this week it isn't going to be any different when we step into the ring against Andrew and Warren Kane. Those two guys are very good friends of mine and if I know anything about them, I know that you really don't want to take your eyes off of them. But this week I'm also going to be watching you Bob, to see what I can learn during our match. I'm going to have one eye on you and the other on them and I....woah....
He accidentally forces himself to go cross-eyed for a moment and he gets a little dizzy. He shakes it off and gets himself back on track.
“I'm going to try and get myself ready for you at Immortals Bob. But we still have one last tag team match before we get there. Against Andrew Jacobsen and Warren Kane. Man, somebody switched the difficulty to hard mode, thats for sure. You know Andrew, I meant what I said about you last week, when I said that I look up to you. You are definitely a mentor and a role model and I think that you are going to go out to that ring on the biggest stage of them all and you are going to defeat Cable Arcane and become the NEW IWF IMPERIAL CHAMPION!
He nods his head and points to himself.
“Because I am a firm believer that you get what you put in, and people get what they deserve. I'm a firm believer that dreams come true. I mean they have to eventually right? Otherwise whats the point of living? And you are going to live your's Andrew. Because you deserve it, that's why. And this week when I get into the ring with you again I will do all I can to absorb every bit of knowledge I can from a guy like you and see what I learn for myself. And then there is Warren Kane....
Jayson gets a little more serious.
“...you know when everything first happened Warren, when your dad first did what he did to you, I did everything I could to step up and defend you. I tried to fight Spike and Rob, I tried to teach them a lesson but I soon found out that your dad was just too strong for me. I wasn't able to stop him. Now here we are, months later and nobody has been able to stop him. We've all tried and he's knocked us all back. I realize now, that no matter how hard any of us tried....we were never going to be able to stop Spike Kane.
He steps forward.
“Because that's where you come in, Warren. It's always been you, buddy. You are the key. You are the one, no the only one that can stop Spike Kane because it's in your blood. I know what an incredible task that must be and that's why I understand if you can't hang out as much as you used to or at all even. But I want you to know dude, from one young sandwich to another, that when your done, when you finally accomplish your goals and your ready....I'm still going to be right here.
He smiles and outstretches his arms.
“Ready and willing to be your friend.”
He nods his head.
“Andrew, Warren, Bob.....A night of Immortals looms over us. We all are coming into this match with plenty of goals and aspirations. A lot of us may even be sort of looking past this match and onto the greatest night of the year. This week it isn't about winning streaks of rivalries or anything that could set us at odds, its about four respectable guys knocking the house down. So boys....this week....”
He pounds a fist into his palm.
“Lets just go bananas.”
Nighthawk: Look, I'm not mad....I'm just disappointed.
That makes it hurt so much worse.
It felt so weird to see Coach glaring at me from behind his desk. He wasn't too happy about the fact that I accepted Bob's challenge. He didn't think I was ready, but I couldn't help myself you know? Bob just threw the challenge out there and I just had too.
I just figured Coach would understand.
Jayson Matthews: I'm sorry coach. But it was now or never....I had to make a decision.
Nighthawk nods his head.
Nighthawk: Hey, I get that Jayson. Sometimes we all must make decisions for ourselves. I'm happy for you and of course I am rooting for you to win regardless, I am just disappointed you acted against my advice. I have been training students for a long time, and one thing that I am big on is trust. You know I only want whats best for you and all the other students.
Jayson hangs his head low.
Jayson Matthews: I know that. I'm sorry coach.
Nighthawk shakes his head.
Nighthawk: No apologies needed, Jayson. I know that deep down you were just following your heart. You made a decision and that is respectable. I will still be there to cheer you on, and of course you are welcome to me facilities, but because you went against my advice and made this decision on your own, you will be training and preparing for this match on your own.
Jayson looks a little shocked by the decision.
Jayson Matthews: Ummmm, but Coach....I....
Nighthawk: You can do it, Jayson. Think of this as another test.
Jayson nods his head.
Jayson Matthews: Yes Coach Nighthawk.
Well things just got interesting.
Riley Gordon: Here it is, hot off the printer. Jayson Matthews verse Bob Pooler for the Invictus Championship at A Night of The Immortals.
