We didn't see what happened at the Wrestle Factory until after our match.
Andrew Jacobsen, Jayson Matthews, Bob Pooler with Warren Kane trailing behind were all heading up the ramp and through the black curtain where Andrew immediately stops and pats Jayson on the shoulder.
Andrew Jacobsen: Good stuff out there Jayson, that's the second match in a row we've had and I can honestly say I'm noticing the Nighthawk influence in your style.
Jayson nods his head and seems appreciative but he can't help but eyeball the delicious deli spread still put out by catering. Andrew glances at Bob with a playful grin.
Andrew Jacobsen: Better watch out Bob, Jay might just be the one to take that title from you.
They share a laugh and a joking elbow nudge.
Bob Pooler: Oh yeah? Well we will see about that.
Bob turns and looks at Jayson with a confident smile on his face. He slaps his challenger on the back.
Bob Pooler: I'll be seeing you Sunday, buddy.
Jayson nods his head and sticks out his chest.
Jayson Matthews: You sure will Mr. Pooler. That deli spread will also be seeing me soon.
Jayson stares at the delicious stacks of thinly sliced meat and fresh baked bread. Jayson makes a break for the table in full stride. Andrew chuckles lightly and then turns to look at Warren who was toweling off after the match with his back turned.
Andrew Jacobsen: Kid has improved leaps and bounds since this time last year. Wouldn't you say so?
Andrew awaits an answer and isn't terribly surprised that Warren only kept his back turned. Although he wasn't sure, it looked an awful lot like Warren smiled slightly and nodded his head.
You know I had my mine set so much on a sandwich that I almost didn't see the stage hand walk up to the other guys. I had already picked out some asiago bread and spread on the chipotle mayo. I was determined to get my after match sandwich.
"Hey you guys haven't seen? Your gonna want to take a look at this."
"Oh no"
"What has he done now?"
I heard the voices but they just went in one ear and out the other. I had broke out the smoked turkey and was picking out the best lettuce and tomato for my precious sandwich. My mouth was salivating at the thought of taking my first bite. I sprinkled some Cajun spice for flavor and all I had left to do was put the top piece of bread on and it was ready.
"Spike no...."
"I didn't want this to happen!"
"My god"
I still didn't hear them. I was too busy perfecting my sandwich. Making sure that bread was perfectly centered and symmetrical. I kept thinking how I deserved this sandwich. All the hard work I've put in, the hard work I still had to put in with Bob looming over the weekend. I was just about to take a bite everything when I heard a specific voice that grabbed my attention.
"NO! YOU GET YOUR GODDAMN HANDS OFF OF HER!!"
I never expected to ever hear that voice with such weakness and fear. It didn't feel right and I felt goosebumps raise all over my body and the hair on the back of my neck stood on ends. I glanced over to see where the voices were coming from and I saw Andrew, Warren and even Bob standing around a tv monitor. I clutched the sandwich close as if it were a Teddy Bear and pushed through Bob and Andrew to get a closer look at what I felt myself being drawn too. What I saw next made me drop my sandwich to the ground.
Jayson watched the screen as Spike Kane was manhandling Nighthawks wife. Jayson could feel his fists clench and his eyes started to well up. He started breathing heavy as Spike tosses Sin to the floor and drag Nighthawk to his feet. You could hear the jagged breaths turn into whimpers of fear an then rage as Jayson watched on, and then it happened....
Jayson Matthews: No!
Spike Kane drags Nighthawks body to the flight of stairs. The same flight he's been walking for months and he simply tosses Nighthawk down the stairs. His body tumbles over itself a few times before landing motionless on the bottom. Jayson couldn't contain his rage and fear and just drops to his knees and lets out a loud scream.
Jayson Matthews:NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!
Andrew tries to comfort him but decides now isn't the best time. Jayson stays silent for a few moments with his head in his hands and then out of nowhere, for the first time ever, Jayson turns back and glares at Warren Kane. The other men glances over at Warren as well. The younger Kane feels nothing but guilt and runs off with his head hung low.
Spike Kane better hope that Warren kicks his lousy stinking ass at A Night of the Immortals because if there is anything left over...
.....I'll be there to finish the job.
“I remember where I was this time last year.”
We open up on Jayson Matthews smiling into the camera.
“I was....or wait-”
He stops to think about it for a second.
“Nah, i'm pretty sure the dolphin thing happened after that....so maybe it was time with the lawn mower and the bottle rockets? Geez, it's on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember it exactly. You know how it is...I'm probably just going to randomly remember it right before I go to sleep or something....but anyways the point is...last year at A Night of The Immortals I was walking into a huge tag team joker in the pack match with my good buddy Warren Kane and we won those bad boys in banana sandwich glory. After that, there wasn't too much left before my mighty fall from grace.
Jayson cringes at the thought.
“Yup, by now everyone has heard about the night I dropped the ball. It's a moment that has become synonymous with my career. If you would have told me after Cable Arcane punked me out in front of everyone that I'd still be managing to wrestle at the greatest show of them all for the Invictus title with a win over Cable in a tag match I'd have probably assumed you were on some type of drugs.
He outstretches his arms.
“But look at me now! Here I am, about go to the greatest wrestling event there is and wrestle for the chance to become the first ever three time champion!”
He stops to consider how crazy that sounds.
“What if im on drugs? What if someone drugged me and I've been tripping this whole time and when I wake up I'm still a loser.....oh man...that would suck...I gotta pinch myself....
He pinches himself on his arm.
“Ow! Okay....It seems like it's real.”
Jayson's goofy grin slowly fades away.
“Well then if it's real then I gotta get serious. Because I've been waiting for an opportunity just like this. When I said I wanted to take my career to the next level, something like this is exactly the way to do it. No matter what happens in my career people are always going to talk about how I dropped the ball when it mattered the most. Everytime I win a match or pull myself closer to the top, even when everyone thinks that I deserve a chance there is always going to be that one jerk who goes...
He does his best condescending child like mocking voice.
“HmMmM...REmbER wHen HE DroppeD THE BaLl!?!?”
“And makes everyone else reconsider. If I ever want to make that go away, if I ever want to clear that out of my record then I have to take the ball and make a SLAM DUNK when it matters the most! And I can't think of better place, where the stakes are the highest, where the spotlight is the brightest....I can't think of a better place to prove to the world what the Jayson Matthews Victory, Gravy, and Associates train of epicness is all a damn bout.
He stares into the camera.
“That's where you come into play Mr. Pooler. That's why I'm so glad that you came out to the ring to issue an open challenge. Because I was caught in a catch twenty two. I was never going to get the chance to truly prove myself again without removing that stigma about me, but I was never going to be able to remove that stigma without proving myself. And it sucks how I got the spot, and this match is just as much for nighthawk as it is for me, but you have to realize Bob, that now that I have this opportunity....”
Jayson pauses and looks into the camera. His blue eyes wide and full of hope.
“....you know I can't let it go.”
Jayson slowly shakes his head.
“I can't let this moment slip through my fingers because there is a good chance, Bob, that I may never get another chance like this again. I'm going to sound a little cliché when I say this next thing Bob, but I just want you to know that when I say this I've never meant more than I do right now....I'm bringing EVERYTHING...I...HAVE to A Night of the Immortals. I need to win this match. Because to me Bob, it is even more than the Invictus Championship around my waste for a third time....it's even more than a huge win in front of the world.....
Jayson steps forward and gazes into the camera. His eyes twinkle with determination.
“....it's Redemption, Bob.”
Jayson clenches his fist.
“And I'm either going to get it.....or die trying...”
Jayson glares into the camera for a few moments before snapping his fingers.
"i was at the Home Depot buying electrical tape!
Fade.
He made it there is record time. He was able to get the first plane out from Cleveland to Chicago and was there before he knew it. Now he stood in front of the door of the Wrestle Factory. The same one that Spike Kane just waltzed right through and did what he did. Jayson's hand hovers over the door handle. He was afraid of what he might find. Or what he might feel.
He takes a deep breath and opens the door and steps inside and he still saw his beloved school left in the same chaos that the God of Xtreme left it in. He saw everything tipped over and wrecked. He saw medics tending to some of his fellow students lucky enough not to need to go to the hospital but the worst thing of all was he saw the rest of his class mates crying. They were sad. They were defeated. They saw a monster defeat there hero.
Sasha: JAYSON!
Before Jayson even knew what was going on he felt the embrace of Sasha. She was crying, sobbing at the events that happened hours before.
Sasha: It was terrible.
She said as she buried her head in his chest. In the distance he could even spot Buzz sitting on some tipped over weight equipment just looking disappointed. So did everyone. They all just felt so low and scared and you know, that made him feel much worse than anything else so far. She pulls back and looks at Jayson, her eyes wide with fear and pools of tears.
Sasha: What do we do now?
She looks around at the giant mess and the daunting empty feeling the school has without Coach Nighthawk in it. Jayson looks around the room and on the floor a few steps away from him was the kendo stick that was used in the attack. Jayson walks over and picks it up and looks at it and as he does it seems like most of the students come and gather around him. Even Buzz steps into the crowd.
Jayson Matthews: We keep fighting.
He holds the stick in his hand as he speaks.
Jayson Matthews: We took a hard loss tonight guys, but what has Coach Nighthawk been teaching us since we got here?
He looks around at everybody seemingly waiting for an answer.
Jayson Matthews: Never give up! Tonight when Spike Kane came in here and attacked Nighthawk, even on a broken leg the Coach didn't give up. He still fought to defend himself and all of you guys. Even now while he is in the hospital he isn't giving up. He didn't give up and we won't either guys.
Some of the students were nodding there heads in agreement. Buzz tried to scoff but Sasha elbowed him in the ribs and continued listening.
Jayson Matthews: Now rest assured, that guy Spike Kane....one way or another...he's going to get what's coming to him. But if we just give up then we let Spike win already and the last thing we want to do is let that bastard get any satisfaction. So lets clean this place up, dust ourselves off, and get back to training. Because it's like they say.....”A wrestler of a thousand holds always gets back up until they can't any longer.”
Jayson smiles at all his friends who were smiling back.
Jayson Matthews: “And we got plenty of fight left in all of us.”
Everyone cheers and they all start helping to clear some of the debris. Jayson stands there for a moment, still staring at the kendo stick. The same one that hurt his fellow class mates but also the same one that smacked Spike in the face. For some reason....he decided to keep it.
