PICCADILLY GARDENS + MANCHESTER, ENGLAND
We find Fiona McFly walking along Manchester's famed Piccadilly Gardens, taking in the serenity of the world-famous landmark whilst following her mentor, Regina Kimble (heretofore referred to as "Miss Kimble"), who is driving around in a specially-customised motor schooter. The former kindergarten teacher-turned-principal couldn't help but smile with Fiona, gazing her eyes upon the clouds parting and giving way to a crystal-clear nighttime sky.
MISS KIMBLE:
So how's Luke coming along working on your album? Is it going well for you?
FIONA MCFLY:
Luke...he's a great, great guy. Very focused on the work, even though it's quite slow. But we're getting there--the "Overture" is done. Now we're debating on the next track to record.
Miss Kimble lovingly nodded her head, closing her eyes as she thought about her son, the drummer in McFly's backing band.
MISS KIMBLE:
I'm happy I got to see him after all these years. He's very much a sprouted man now.
FIONA:
That he is--and a wonderful drummer.
Miss Kimble took a deep breath, stopping her powerchair next to an open-door, 24/7 cafe to take in the lively scene of tourists and locals chattering, having a grand time with their special someone.
MISS KIMBLE:
I miss being able to take long and refreshing walks. When I was a child living here, I used to walk along from my house, with my parents, to the local record shop where I'd peruse through all the Beatles' works. Whenever I was angry, I'd come here, close my eyes, and sing to myself.
Fiona closed her eyes for a moment, releasing a sigh as she continued walking down the path with Regina following.
FIONA:
I want to be honest here...I wouldn't even be alive tonight if it weren't for you. You helped me in more ways than I can't even begin to imagine--dealing with me mum's issues, marrying Jack, working on the album. And if I ever remember one thing and one thing only, it's that life isn't about the person living it. It's about what goes on around you--that's how stories are told, new ideas come to pass. Sometimes my mind goes wrong on a few things, but...that's just part of being human.
The pair stopped again--this time, they found themselves alongside a bench, with Fiona pulling out her iPhone to check the time and her messages.
MISS KIMBLE:
I don't know if you know this...but when I first met Jack back in 1987, I was amazed in how humble and polite he really was. He was skittish, however...'cos Beckham Elementary School was very new to him. Then...he fought with that second grade bully Farkus and became a legend. At that point, I knew he was going to be very special--but he never wanted to make that moment about himself. He wanted everyone to know...that it's alright to defend family, for family was THE pillar of strength of his life. When everything fell apart around him after his mum was killed, I...I felt his pain, took to alcohol to ease it. The other children didn't see it, but in my soul, I was a mess. Then, something happened--probably the greatest thing ever to happen in my life.
The teacher's smile slowly dissolved into a solemn frown as she began to recall the darkest chapters of her own life from the late-1980s and into the early-1990s.
MISS KIMBLE:
I got arrested for DWI, summer 1990. I did the time, and was forced to resign my posting at Beckham. I exiled myself to a little house outside Fredericksburg, Texas--where my grandfather still lived--and tried my hand at racing cars. As much as I loved it...I had to remind myself that I was a teacher who loved children more than anything else, that taught things like family, friendship. bonding...and respect. Then out of nowhere, in that grimy old boneyard...there you were. You were the scavenger for my grandfather, getting your hands dirty to make ends meet in spite of your mum's hatred of that regard. And as hard as it was, thinking that I would never, ever be able to share the meaning of love and compassion for others...you were there for me. You were so determined to win that race, I could see that in your eyes...and you did, even as people snickered and laughed.
Fiona sat down on the bench, watching as Miss Kimble moved her specialised chair next to her.
FIONA:
Miss Kimble...*we* won that race. I didn't do it alone...you got me there, you gave me courage to believe that I could do anything my heart wanted as long as I never gave up on it.
Regina smiled lovingly at the Northern Irishwoman, gently patting her in the left arm with her hand.
MISS KIMBLE:
I knew I made the right decision when I became your guardian after you mum returned to Northern Ireland. You...were the reason why I got back into teaching kindergarten, why I returned to Beckham and became its principal. You gave me my life back, Fiona. You gave me a reason to keep on living even as I thought about giving up entirely...and I wanted to say "thank you." I didn't know it at the time...but I believed that I could bring you and Jack closer together.
FIONA:
And you made that happen...it wasn't easy at first, but it happened. We owe our lives to you, you made US believe in ourselves, that we could do anything our hearts desired.
Both ladies eked out giant smiles on their faces, taking in the tranquility that the gardens had to offer.
MISS KIMBLE:
Let's take a breather...watch the people move about. Perhaps...we can listen to some stories, like the children I taught used to tell whilst I was teaching kindergarten.
Fiona nodded her head excitedly.
FIONA:
Sounds like a splendid idea...
