Devlin was in the gym, beating in a bag even as he grunted, breath heaving as he worked himself ragged, pacing left and right eyes closed as he sighed softly nodding a bit.
A quick look at a the phone and he saw a text from Kate, that made him smile as he picked up his clothes and stepped out among London streets, getting into the car he’d hired to have a good drive in the neon lit streets of Piccadilly Circus.
He turned the wheel and drove a little further to find a place to park, walking out among the populous, taking a moment to watch them watch c this city, watch how ordinary it all felt even as he listened to the call to prayer on the wind.
He breathed the city, and he realised he was without his usual muse so out came the phone and he dialled.
It took a while but eventually the phone picked up.
“Dev? I thought you’d be asleep. Christ this’ll cost you a fortune in fees.”
It felt good to hear her voice even as he ran an hand over the back of the bench he’d claimed, thankfully the signal was holding on but England was an unpredictable beast when it came to mobile networks so he smiled and spoke.
“I missed you, so I thought I’d call your ass up and you can try and cheer me up. And it’s only money.”
Kate chuckles a bit and her tone softened.
“Devlin Raine admitting he misses me , it must be bad, Nervous. Angry? What’s wrong babe?”
Devlin sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
“Some of column A , Some of Column B.”
Kate chuckles.
“You hit the town yet? It’s London Devlin…”
She trailed off and Devlin smiled gently.
“You could cut the tension in some parts of this city with a knife Kate…Folk are hurting.”
Kate chuckles.
“There you go sounding like a hero again Devlin, careful I’m starting to like this.”
She was teasing but she was right, he was sounding more and more like a hero, and he was starting to feel comfortable doing it, facing the odds again and again even if they weren’t on his side, but he’d never be Andrew Jacobsen, he had just enough dirt on him and a little to spare.
“Thanks Kate, Tell 'Lex I love him..”
There was a pause and Kate chuckles.
“Tell him yourself.”
Devlin laughs a bit and smiles and spent a few minutes being idiotically adorable with his son, because I dare you to name one person who doesn’t melt a bit when their child is involved in being cute and you miss them.
Yeah, there was your answer, Devlin, on the other end of your phone in a city that stands proud, stands loud and tall in the face of terrible thing after terrible thing they sit in the open ad scream I did It my way.
Time to work.
Background music: 1812 overture Finale - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Static burst, video glitches quick, sporadic cuts of Ryan Shane’s Attack on Devlin after the match , The Man of Steel Belt.
We find Devlin behind a desk, the “D:TV” logo loud and proud as he spoke softly to the camera, almost restrained as we hear the tell-tale chimes of Big Ben in the background.
“Good Evening, England, Allow me first to apologise for this interruption, I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of everyday routine, the security of the familiar, the tranquillity of repetition, the totality of television. I enjoy them as much as any bloke.”
Devlin smiles as he stands up and clicks his fingers as a Door behind him starts to open with Dry ice smoke emitting just beyond as Devlin smiles and shakes his head.
“But This isn’t routine, and this isn’t the familiar, We’re in a new age Ladies and Gentlemen, Destiny has called once again and I for one Intend to Deliver.”
Devlin shrugs off his jacket start to walk for the door as he smirks.
“Because the war has only just begun, the real revolution? Starts now.”
Devlin steps through the door and we find ourselves in that now familiar casino Devlin however was not wearing the Dealer’s uniform, instead he was sat in at the bar idly sipping a soda.
“No, you see this right here is the first true test, against a man whose name is no stranger to me or the IWF, and I know what you are thinking I mean I had every right to let Shane rot, and ya must think this whole shebang is pretty stupid, right Taking Shane on after that back stab, I should play it safe take somebody who earned it instead of provoking me.”
Devlin chuckles brightly.
“You’d be right, but the thing is, Ryan Shane is a challenge, and If I had said no I could guarantee he would be worming is way into Bloody Ass sizes to put me on my ass, make folk take notice, this is not my first rodeo, no Shane I gave you want you want so I could have what I want.”
Devlin leant on his shoulders as the bartender, dressed in a red velvet jacket white shirt and black bow it was polishing down the bar shook his head listening to the words.
“Lloyd here knows, Shane that you think I’m not meant for this that hoe how I’m just a temporary obstacle in the path to your rightful holding of the Man of Steel belt that I’m a plucky young rookie who knows dick about the business, and really You couldn’t be more wrong Shane, you couldn’t have misjudged me any more than you already have, People mistake my joking around for youthful exuberance but the reality is? I already know how this business can eat at you, can gnaw away and makes you bitter if you let it."
Devlin shook his head examining the drink just a touch before continuing.
"You’ve done that Shane, to the extent that you feel like the universe owes you a favour, that you’re Ryan Shane and you belong at the highest heights and whatever you ask for should just be placed in your lap without so much as a whimper.”
Devlin chuckles again and salutes with the bottled soda.
“Sorry Shane, ain’t going to happen. You see the Man Of Steel belt has left an a big pair of shoes to fill, and I’m filling them, but I don’t just intend to fill them Shane, the first step to being a god slayer is to defeat the god. Been there done that… Next step…Defeat his legend , make his legacy yours.”
Devlin remained intense smiling slightly as he took another sip.
“You see Shane, We’re still competing for what is considered part of Spike Kane’s legacy, the sinew and bones that sit on my waist when I enter Bloody Assizes in London? People look at it and still see Spike Kane’s belt, they see Spike Kane’s actions and deed because he’s held it so long it’s like part of his reliquary, his robes of office if you will.“
A shake of his head.
“The spectre of Spike still looms over both of us Shane, and when I won this belt, I made a Vow, a Promise that I would hold this belt for longer than anyone has ever held it, you, Spike Kane.. Anyone You see what I didn’t tell anyone is that at Night of the immortal I realised the Destiny That called me was the 365 challenge.”
Devlin leaned forwards and smiles.
“You might think this is the ramblings of a cocky fool Ryan, that I don’t have what it takes but I started a war At Night of the immortals and you’re just another solider looking to come take what I’ve earned with my sweat, my pain I said already I wasn’t going to walk quiet ley I told you I was a good man going to war, and when you stabbed me in the back after looking me In the face That I will make another statement of your destiny.”
Devlin smirks.
“You won’t beat me, and I’m going to look good not being beaten I promise you I will rise to my feet before the 10 count again and again and again and I will not tap because this belt is going nowhere.”
Devlin puts the bottle down and grins.
“So bring you’re A Plus Game Shane, Bring everything , Because this isn’t hubris this is me, putting my stamp on this company not just for me, but for everybody at home who keeps getting told. They can’t do it, Destiny is something you seize.. Except in your case on Sunday Shane. Because your destiny was dealt to you the minute you locked me in that hold.”
Devlin stands up and puts a small gold coin on the counter an nods to Lloyd before wandering for the door , which he opens again with a click of his fingers.
“Toodle pip!”
And As Devlin steps through the door the scene fades the black.
