As Nighthawk sits on a hospital bed in the HealthSouth Medical Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, with his left leg elevated and in a cast and recovery sleeve after what appears to be successful surgery for his torn ACL and MCL, we see his ice-blue eyes in slits as he is quite clearly unwilling to take any more pain medication other than what is necessary. Slowly opening his eyes, his pupils thoroughly dilated, the “Wrestling Machine” exhales before tracking to see the camera.
Nighthawk, his speech slurred somewhat which is expected after having come out of surgery: “I miss the little things. I don’t miss getting beaten up and having to drag my body off the canvas. I especially don’t miss the constant travel.
What I do miss are the autograph signings. If you’re some big shot in a town we visited, I’m sorry that I wasn’t signing autographs for you. Kids, though, are a different matter. Showing up at a building, and seeing fans wearing your t-shirt and holding signs explaining how they support you, is a feeling you’ll never be able to understand. I miss it.
I miss the feel of a properly taped hand. I’ve traveled enough places, and been in enough countries, that I know what a poorly wrapped hand feels like. You new guys coming in fresh to IWF don’t know how lucky you have it. There was a time, not too long ago, when I had to tape my own hands and have my tag partner help me with it. Now, in IWF, the trainer will help me. I miss my hands being set up just right.
And above all else, I miss the locker room. I miss the guys. I miss talking to Devlin Raine about home, and about art. I miss talking to Andrew Jacobsen about grappling, and I miss my friend and student Jayson Matthews.
If you had to ask me what I miss, it’s that.
And hopefully, one day soon, I can get it all back.”
