It’s been almost three months since the worst night in Ryan Shane’s life. On that night he was brutally attacked by Spike Kane. Initially refusing medical attention, he had no choice but to be hospitalized after passing out. It wasn’t only his body that was broken that night, but his heart.
The phone call he took was from the mother of Amber, the love of his life, and mother of his child. Ryan wasn’t even sure if he was hearing things right at first. She was hysterical, and with good reason. On March 26th, 2017, Amber and her son Rhett were both found dead.
Murdered…
Amber was shot in the chest from close range with a shotgun. The baby, smothered with a pillow next to his dead mother. It was a tragedy. Two people taken away too soon. It was too much for Ryan to bare. He spent two weeks in the hospital. His body healed, but his heart still ached. He missed the funerals, he couldn’t muster the will to go.
How could he face her friends and family?
He wasn’t there to protect them.
He shouldn’t have had to protect them from him. Ryan thought that he loved them. But I guess he was wrong. Perhaps he felt betrayed. Still...there was no reason to end their lives. The man who did it?
Ethan Keith.
Amber’s high school boyfriend, and current partner. He couldn’t lose Amber to Ryan again. His pride wouldn’t allow it. The whispers he would hear around town ate away at him. That was what the note he left said. See, Ethan Keith wasn’t only a murderer, but a coward.
He turned the shotgun on himself that night as well.

It’s the night before Bloody Assizes. While many of the competitors are taking in the sights of London, and enjoying their time, Ryan Shane is locked away in his hotel room. It isn’t some fancy hotel either, like many of the IWF roster and staff are staying at. Instead it’s a bit of a rundown place, away from all of that.
Distractions.
They are not what Ryan needs right now, on the eve of potentially winning his second Man of Steel championship. Yet, despite what he does, distractions are what his life has become. Three months later, and he can’t move on. Perhaps he doesn’t want to…
Ryan Shane: Looks like I need another bottle…
He turns the empty bottle of vodka over, and reaches for another. It’s the cheap stuff, no point in wasting the good stuff on his misery. Ryan opens up the bottle and takes a drink. With every drink he gets a little sicker, and a little braver.
Holding the bottle with one hand, he reaches for a bottle of sleeping pills with the other.
He closes his eyes and bows his head. This is when Ryan feels hands on his shoulders. When he opens his eyes, Amber is there.
Ryan Shane: Amber, how?
Amber Lynn: Don’t worry about that Ryan. Just enjoy that we can see each other again.
Ryan Shane: I’ve missed you and Rhett so much.
He can barely hold back tears. She cradles him to her chest.
Amber Lynn: We miss you too, but we can be together again. You know that…
He looks at the two bottles and knows that when mixed together they potentially could provide him with what he seeks. A way for him and his family to be together.
Ryan Shane: I’ve been trying...to work up the nerve.
She looks at him and frowns.
Amber Lynn: The nerve? Don’t you love us? Don’t you want to be together?
Ryan Shane: More than anything…
Amber Lynn: Please…
That’s all it took for Ryan to open the bottle the pills. He dumps the contents into his mouth. Amber smiles at him as he gets ready to wash them down with a swig of vodka. That’s when he hears a scream.
Ryan shakes his head and Amber is gone. He spits out the pills onto the carpet of his room. That’s when he hears another scream. Slowly getting to his feet, Ryan makes his way to the window. When he looks out he can see a man attacking a teenage girl.
Without hesitation Ryan rushes out the door.
Ryan Shane: Leave her alone…
Ryan is a little wobbly, and lightheaded, as he makes his way toward the man.
Man: Mind your business...unless you want to die tonight…
This doesn’t deter Ryan as he makes his way toward the man. The teenage girl, who is on the ground begins to back away.
Ryan Shane: Death doesn’t scare me…
The man brandishes a knife and shows it to Ryan. He then comes at Shane with a stabbing motion. Even though he is more than a little drunk, Ryan steps to the side and drops the man with a left hand.
With the attacker out cold, Ryan turns to the teenage girl. She is getting to her feet.
Ryan Shane: Are you alright?
The girl nods before running off. As Ryan watches her disappear into the night, he hears the sirens of police cars. He returns to his room, hoping to avoid any further interactions.
On this night, him being alive, might have saved the life another.
For now...that could be reason enough to live.

Bloody Assizes…
It was this time last year that I was defending MY Man of Steel championship. On the night, I defeated Nighthawk. People were talking about how big of a deal that was, I didn’t see it. He was basically plucked out of nowhere and given the shot because at the time...nobody was deemed worthy. Anyone who had interest in the title had moved on to bigger and better things. I bested Zasshu twice. I took on JFK on Open Fight Night for the championship. I didn’t disrespect him like some would and make him earn a shot.
My motto last year was “Just Ask”.
I took on all comers. I ducked no one. It didn’t matter who it was. I stepped in the ring, the cage, and beat them. I was the definition of Man of Steel. So when it came time to face Addisyn Starr and her man servant at Lineage, I did so willingly. It didn’t matter that she was making a farce of the whole thing. It didn’t matter that she didn’t deserve it. I got in there and fought as hard as I could. I lost that night, and instead of being remembered for being a great champion...I was remembered for only one thing…
Losing to a girl…
Nothing could have been further from the truth. I went toe to toe with a beast that night and barely survived. I suffered injuries that would cost me the next eight months. The guy was too green to even be in the ring, and that was proven when JFK defeated him. A man as I’ve mentioned, I dispatched with ease during my run.
Then Spike Kane happened…
I did what some called stupid. I stepped into the cage with him. It wasn’t to win the Man of Steel title, Spike was too smart to risk it, even if I wasn’t at full strength. On that night I proved that I still had what it took, even in defeat. On that night, I know Spike Kane gained respect for me. That’s why he made sure I didn’t even get a chance in the Roulette. He knew I could win the whole damn thing.
I came close last year.
It seems that Spike might have been the only one taking me seriously. When I came back, I shouldn’t have had to jump through hoops to reclaim my place. I never got a rematch for the Man of Steel title. I had to sit back and watch a crop of new superstars take centerstage. It was a slap in the face, one I won’t forget.
I had to see guys like Will Fenell, The Lost Boys, and even Devlin Raine rise up the ranks. It seemed that I was all but forgotten about. When I returned to the ring and defeated an even more pathetic Nighthawk, did anyone take notice. No, all they did was talk about how big of a lose it was to see him injured. God forbid the IWF continue on without such a beloved figure.
When Joker in the Pack came around, I was put in the ring with these new stars in what was considered the least star studded affair, especially by that hack Tyler Jacobs. I was the biggest star in the damn thing, it was mine to win. Obviously that didn’t happen. That honor went to Devlin Raine. Then, on the same night, he showed what an idiot he was.
He cashed in against Spike Kane…
He had an Imperial title shot in the bank, and he wasted it on some sort of pathetic revenge.
What a waste…
That’s pretty much what you are Devlin. A waste. A man not worthy of the position you’ve found yourself in. Everything you’ve done since winning the Cruiserweight Invitational has been luck. Joke in the Pack win, luck. Man of Steel title win, luck. You didn’t do anything on your own. All you did was make a fool of yourself. No matter what you do from now on, you’ll be the guy who passed on an Imperial title shot.
I was willing to look past all of that. I was willing to give you a chance. When I came to you, you knew I wanted a shot at the Man of Steel title. Instead of accepting it, and giving the fans what they want, and trust me they want it. You said I had to earn it. I had to beat you one on one. You understand how laughable that is right? You expected me to follow rules that even you yourself couldn’t?
Why do fans cheer you again?
I never intended to attack you after our match Devlin. Call it a moment of impulse, but I don’t regret it. You needed to be taught a lesson. A lesson I still don’t think you understand. If you did, you wouldn’t have agreed to a Man of Steel title match at Bloody Assizes. Yet, you still have to get revenge on those who’ve done you wrong. Is that what you think I’ve done? I just wanted a chance to get MY title back. I’m sorry that I played you for the fool you are.
I know after your huge victory over Spike Kane, you want to prove you deserve to be Man of Steel champion. To prove you’re not a fluke. That’s where I come in. If you want to carve out your own reign you needed to defend against a worthy competitor. Look up and down the roster and tell me of someone else who is going to give you the challenge you need...the answer is no one.
You’re welcome!
I’m not looking past you Devlin, I would never do that. I’m smarter than that. What I am going to do is prove that I won’t be forgotten. I’m still a viable star in the IWF. I’m still going to be the biggest name in the business. There is nothing going to stop that. If I have to take on you news guys one by one to get there, so be it! I’m used to being overlooked, but I’m not just going to take it.
I have a chance to make history at Bloody Assizes. I have the chance to be the first ever TWO time Man of Steel champion. That’s my goal. That’s where my focus is. That’s all I want right now. The rest will come. Raine, you still have a ways to go before. After this Sunday you’re going to have to settle as a footnote in the legacy of Ryan Shane.
I’ve place nice for too long Devlin. All it has gotten me is on the outside looking in. It’s time to forget about being liked, it time to forget about what people might say, it’s time to take my place as Man of Steel champion, again. I know I said you were a fool for passing up on the Imperial shot for a Man of Steel one. I still believe this Raine, but I don’t want you to think I don’t know what being Man of Steel means.
I know better than you ever will.
When that cage lowers, only one of us is going to walk out with the championship. You can’t beat me with some lucky three count, it won’t be that simple. Knockout or submission only, that’s what it will take. I have a lot more experience when it comes to a Man of Steel match. I know what it takes. If I get knocked down, I get back up. If you think I’m going to quit, you’ve got another thing coming. You should do yourself a favor and stay down. When I lock in the Crying Shane, you should give up.
There isn’t anything I won’t do to win.
I’m done playing the victim, from here on out...I make victims out of my opponents.
I’m starting with you Raine.
You may be “The Destiny Dealer” and I’m sure you’re thinking you’ve got this one in the bag. I believe in destiny myself, and I make my own.
I know I walking out of Bloody Assizes as TWO time Man of Steel champion. Devlin, you better hope that you can walk out at all.
